White House elated as energy tax plan advances in committee

President Carter and aides hailed a Bureau Ways and Means vote rejecting a new tax while endorsing a modified energy tax to promote conservation. The plan would raise domestic oil prices toward world levels, with phased increases that could lift a household bill by more than three dollars annually until about thirteen fifty-one. House lawmakers argued the move would narrow the price gap between domestic and foreign oil.

Rhea Taylor Wounded in Roswell Park Shootout

Rhea Taylor, IBM marketing representative in Roswell, and friend Bob Willis were shot at Mirror Lake in Bottomless Lakes State Park near Roswell on May 26. Two gunmen wounded Taylor twice with .38 caliber bullets midextremity while nearby Tessier and family escaped unharmed.
