The Lovington Daily Leader announces a forthcoming Progress Edition of about 60 pages to be published before month’s end or early June. The note mentions delays, plans, and a humorous aside about anvils for the Fourth, plus a Demolay report on Lovington and a census spoof with exaggerated figures.
Lovington welcomes the State Highway Commission for a two day visit with social and business events. A Wednesday reception at the Lovington Country Club from 6 to 7 30 p m opens the stay. A public Thursday breakfast at the Pioneer Steak House meeting room follows, in Lea County Electric Cooperative, with Eddy County delegation expected.
The Pentagon discloses a broad pullback ending by August including Army reservists and Marine forces. About 25 000 men in nondivisional Army units and 20 reserve elements will demobilize, with less than 1 000 Navy personnel and several Air National Guard squadrons already returning home. The move affects the 9th Infantry Division brigades and Regimental Landing Team 9 of the 3rd Marine Division, while one 9th Brigade is to be deactivated.
In Albuquerque the resolutions committee of the state Democratic convention approved a measure to confine the gathering to party reorganization. If ratified, the chairman could veto other floor issues, as the group outlines new rules on reapportioning the State Central Committee by county population.
John Warren received double honors at the Ambucs Lovington chapter installation at the Western Grill. He was installed president and named Ambuc of the year by L V Rea, a Lovington member, in a ceremony last night.
Calvary Baptist Church at 613 WwW Ave B has called Dick Ross a longtime New Mexico resident to serve as pastor. Ross comes from Fort Worth Texas where he attended seminary and was associate pastor at Williams Road Baptist Church. He previously served Meridian Baptist Church in Meridian Texas as minister of music and youth. He is a 1965 Eastern New Mexico University graduate active in Baptist Student Union and has summer missionary experience. His wife Norma is from Logan New Mexico and they have a baby daughter named Sandy. Mrs. Ross taught vocational office education in Fort Worth.
Rudolpho Gonzales of the Cruse of Justice in Denver urged President Nixon to probe the arrest of Reies Lopez Tijerina, head of the Alianza land grant group. Tijerina was jailed in Albuquerque after a bond revocation linked to a 1967 assault on a federal officer.
Lovington and Lea County residents will vote Tuesday for 70 delegates to a constitutional convention. Four districts cover Lea County with four winners each. District 1 includes Lovington area. District 4 covers Eunice Jal. Three polling places will serve Lovington District 1, two in Lovington and one in Tatum.
New Mexico Democrats met in Albuquerque to adopt population based apportionment for the State Central Committee. The plan fixes a 168 member base with two per county plus one for every 1000 votes for governor, plus two Young Democrats making 170 total. Senator Fred Harris urged unity during the convention.

Lovington and the north Lea County area faced a brief cooldown after two days of relative calm. Severe thunderstorms hit the South Plains in Texas while eastern New Mexico stayed milder with a sprinkle of rain. North winds pushed a cold front through Lovington, lowering Saturday morning temperatures to about 51 degrees, an unusual mid June chill.
Kelle wood Co plans a new $900,000 apparel factory in Clovis with 600 workers, contingent on today’s area labor survey results. Company president Norwood Jones and Clovis Industrial Commission chair Dr. I D Johnson noted most hires would be women and the project hinges on meeting labor needs.
Gov. David Cargo said on a Carlsbad radio station he will likely run for the U.S. Senate next year. He noted he has not announced and called it too early, but indicated he would pursue a seat possibly held by U.S. Sen. Joseph M. Montoya or Clinton P. Anderson if retired.
Eastern New Mexico University releases spring honor roll listing 418 students. To qualify, students need a 3.25 GPA or higher and 15 or more semester hours. Forty eight students earned a perfect 4.0, marked all A’s, with Lea County representatives including Lovington and Eunice among others.
