Tijerina Trial Months Away

Robbers Hit Piggly Wiggly in Lovington Heist

Sheriff's deputies report a roof entry at the Piggly Wiggly in north Lovington last night. The safe was drilled open and $13 365 in cash and checks were taken. no one injured. A separate burglar alarm at Llano Super Market rang at 8 30 pm but a loose connection was fixed after arrival.

Investigation Called For National Guard Activities in New Mexico

Congressman Joseph Resnick urged the Justice Department to investigate National Guard actions in Tier ra Amarilla New Mexico. He said the probe should determine if civil rights of innocent people were violated and identify those responsible. The House agricultural subcommittee has been examining last week's Spanish American insurrection in Northern New Mexico where the Guard aided in a search.

Canjilon Music Camp Participants Reported Housed by Guardsmen

About 50 people at Canjilon were reportedly rounded up by guardsmen and kept in a cattle pen for nearly 24 hours. Officials dispute civil rights violations, with State Police Chief Joe Black and Maj. Gen. John P. Jolly denying rights violations and noting the group had food and tents. Chief Black ordered further hold on the group while facts are clarified.

Arrestee Tied to Tierra Amarilla Courthouse Raid

Alfonso Chavez, named as a leader of a Spanish-American land grant group, was arrested in Albuquerque on a Santa Fe warrant for taking part in the Tierra Amarilla courthouse raid of June 5. Chavez appeared in federal court Tuesday as part of the ongoing case.

Churches Seek Boys for Summer Camp in Probation Program

A Baptist affiliated program invites boys under 13 on probation or with police trouble to join a two site summer camp. Led by Rev. E J Bradshaw, Perry Denton, Lee Greebon, and the Carlsbad juvenile officer, the camp offers life skills, conservation, and daily sermons with all expenses paid. The effort emphasizes non denominational outreach and post camp follow up.
