An army truck with 25 paratroopers from the 101st Airborne Division skidded off a gravel road at Fort Campbell Kentucky and plunged 25 feet into a creek, killing at least 14 and injuring nine. Rescuers freed trapped men as helicopter ladders aided recovery. the cause is under investigation.
Wheat farmers will vote June 20 at the ASC office on East Washington from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. The eligibility rule now includes all persons sharing in the 1958 wheat crop on farms in the commercial wheat area with wheat to be harvested plus wheat in the reserve. Two-thirds of eligible voters must approve to enact quotas for 1958. failure leaves allotments in effect with 50 percent parity support for compliant farmers. Lea County wheat production is very low.
Ben Rummerfield of Century Geophysical Corp will discuss The Birth of a New Industry at the New Mexico Geophysical Society monthly meeting. The talk covers US progress in uranium supply and a case study of Ambrosia Lake area mineral development.
An Egyptian government paper charges Secretary Dulles with a cloak and dagger plot to topple President Nasser. It claims isolation of Egypt from Arab states as the first move and an inside attack. The report notes Saud of Saudi Arabia ends a six day visit and backs moves to align Jordan and Lebanon against Egypt. A U N patrol in Gaza shoots and kills an Arab crossing from Israel after warning shots.
Lovington Schools consider establishing a local college under the Lay Committee guidance. After a three hour meeting they plan to visit four similar institutions in the state and urge the School Board to pursue the project when conditions warrant. County graduates approach 1000 yearly, suggesting Lea County could support a college with night classes for residents.
Thirty minutes after leaving a Tatum motel Lewis Black age and address unknown was jailed in Plains on bad check charges. He paid with a check drawn on Odessa State Bank a bank that does not exist. Deputies learned Black had boarded a bus toward Brownfield and Plains officers halted the vehicle and detained him. He was said to be very drunk and unable to speak until early Friday when he signed a waiver agreeing to return to New Mexico to face charges.
A Hobbswoman from Opa Han Cock reports her husband Howell Hancock missing Friday morning. Hancock, 33, 5 feet 9, 135 pounds with brown hair and four front teeth missing, left for work at 7 am wearing a lavis and a red blue sport shirt. He has about $100 and is believed en route to Hopkinsville Kentucky.
Free parking will be available for four days during the National Rodeo. Meters will remain unbagged as bags are costly and easily damaged by children. Rubber bands over meter heads are often taken by youngsters for slingshots. City commission was urged to offer free parking to welcome visitors. No tickets will be issued during the event.
A parade Saturday at 9:30 after a 8:30 assembly at the First Baptist Church marks the start for a ten day Vacation Bible School. Rev. Clarence Pope and wife arrive to assist with supervision and music. Commencement with handiwork display and certificates set for Wednesday, June 26. Joyce England Stanley Hara Da and Kay Sumrud will return Friday after a week at Junior Camp in the Sacramento Mountains. Summer Camp starts July 8 and prospective attendees are urged to obtain health certificates at the Methodist Church office.
Mr and Mrs Hammel Carrell left early Thursday for Amarillo where she was to undergo major surgery at a local hospital.
The State Oil Conservation Commission denied a federal request to cut New Mexico July oil allowable by 5 percent. The OCC kept the limit at 38 barrels per day per unit, same as this month, despite the federal recommendation for a two barrel cut. Dan Nutter, the OCC’s petroleum engineer, urged maintaining the current level and criticized federal control as a threat to the industry. He said New Mexico, a growing state, has the right to expand its markets for oil and gas production.
Morning report says two African Dominican priests were freed from Red Chinese captivity after four years on espionage charges. Jesuit Father Charles McCarthy of San Francisco reports good health and says Father John Houle of Glendale has a bad back. They expect to depart Shanghai within ten days for the free world.
District Judge C. Roy Anderson of Carlsbad presided in Lovington last Friday issuing multiple judgments and orders. Notable items include divorce decrees for several couples, property and compensation awards, counts against Texas Co. and Dresser Engineering Co., and appointments of special masters and guardians.
Lovington police plan a Western themed turnout for the rodeo with officers to wear wide brim straw hats navy blue bow ties and western style clothing. Chief James Robinson says it would be the first true western dress by any city police and may become summer wear if successful.
First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Lea County declares a 32 percent dividend on all savings. Secretary Manager Schrader announced after the directors meeting. checks cover first 30 days of operation and are payable June 36. Outlook remains strong for at least 32 percent future dividends as the enterprise expands loans in Hobbs Lovington Tatum and Eunice.
San Mateo rancher Floyd W. Lee told an Albuquerque Rotary Club that the livestock industry should be stressed in New Mexico. He cited that 97 percent of the state's land is suited only for grazing and valued grass as a renewable resource, noting over 3,000 wool growers and about 13 million sheep in New Mexico.

Corporal William Boyd Creek, 19, son of Mr and Mrs Floyd Creek who run a farm nine miles east on the Denver City Highway, holds the rank of corporal as of June 1 while stationed in Hong Kong China. His brother Pvt Bobby L Creek serves in the Marines at Camp Pendleton California and Billy Creek served fourteen months in the Marines.
Damages totaling 750 dollars resulted from a two car collision at Avenue A and First Street Thursday morning. No injuries. A 54 Ford driven by 16 year old Patsy Lee Homer failed to yield to a 56 Mercury driven by C. W. Hudgens of West Star route in Lovington. Homer, of 1017 W. Jackson, was cited for failing to yield under the new teenage driver law effective June 7. The Ford sustained the most damage at 400 dollars.
Army specialist William Girard repudiated claims that officers pressured him to stand trial in a Japanese court. In a Seattle press conference he said no one in the army pushed him, only restrictions on his movements at Camp Whittington Japan. He denied misunderstanding his earlier telephone remarks to UP reporter Dick Horning.
Richard Shelton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Shelton, is resting comfortably after a gasoline explosion severely burned him Wednesday morning. His grandfather Dick Doss burned his hands while helping extinguish the blaze as the boy poured gasoline and lit it, causing a flash that soaked his clothing and feet before neighbors intervened.

A federal judge in Albuquerque sentenced Billy Mitchell of Hobbs to one year in prison after he pleaded guilty to stealing more than $300 from Lea County State Bank in Hobbs. Mitchell served as a vice president at the bank.
Miss Betty McClish fourteen year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Marvin McClish of the McDonald community is recovering from a dental operation. Two wisdom teeth were removed.
