Santa Fe New Mexico United Press International reports Attorney General Toney Anaya criticizes state workers for not putting in eight hours while Governor Jerry Apodaca rebukes the remark as unfair. Both are Democratic Senate contenders for 1978 and spar over government efficiency and openness. Anaya says workers must earn public respect and combat a gravy train image. Apodaca says his administration seeks better production and accuses Anaya of mischaracterizing state staff.
Mahlon Love, once fired by Gov. Jerry Apodaca as a member and later as state police chief, is elected governor. King praised Love as an outstanding chairman while noting his dismissal for improper actions including wearing a state police uniform at public events and aiding in underwater recoveries. Apodaca said Love would be fired June 14 unless he resigns.
Mexico’s share of public works funding totals about $25.7 million this year. State government and communities will decide on local allocations under the Public Works bill approved by the Environment and Works Committee. Domenici notes additional funds may come, with Albuquerque, Bernalillo, Las Cruces, and other towns receiving specified amounts.
Pat Caraway, a 46 year old Rollingwood resident near Austin, says she will sue to overturn a city ordinance restricting political lawn signs to rental or sale. She accuses the rule of violating civil rights and plans legal action with support from the Texas Liberties Union if the council does not revise the ordinance before the next campaign.
