Perkins elected vice president of NM Rural Letter Carriers

September Rodeo Planned By City Chamber Directors

Hail damage in Lea County is light to date with about 600 acres of cotton reported damaged and some fields up to 80 percent destroyed. County Agent Jim Gilstrap notes 28 500 acres planted this year, 6 000 more than 1958, while some tomato fields are total losses and insurers report spotty cotton damage with no single pattern.

Red Cross swim lessons announced for six week summer program

Red Cross announces a summer program of six week swim lessons led by instructor A D Black. Registration at Lovington Country Club pool Friday 10 am to 6 pm. Open to anyone six years or older with no charge for the course. non members pay 3.50 pool fee per 10 lessons. Lessons run 8 30 to 1 30 am daily Monday through Friday with two week periods from June 15 to July 3.

Fifteen Lea County homemakers attended the Homemakers College held last week in Las Cruces. Lovington Fire Dept Sets Disaster Warning Siren Test

Fire Chief Rusty Woodward announced a four minute continuous siren blast to signal a storm or disaster warning. An all clear will be a similar but shorter signal of about two minutes. The department has been receiving many phone calls whenever the siren sounds.

Million Dollar Pipe Links Empire Abo to Caprock Fields

A $1 million eight inch pipeline will run 45 miles from the Empire Abo field in Eddy County to Caprock in Lea County, linking major New Mexico oil plays. When complete it is expected to move 20 000 barrels daily and ease eastern pipeline congestion while boosting drilling in the region. Governor Burroughs and Oil Commission members praise the project as strengthening the state economy.

State Highway Dept Paid Lea County For Highway Rights Of Way

The State Highway Department paid Lea County property owners $10,711 for highway rights of way in the last five months. Chief Highway Engineer L D Wilson said that since January payments to property owners in 23 New Mexico counties total $1,373,365, with overall right of way payments since January 1958 at $3,655,224. The January 1958 date marks the start of periodic public reports on right of way costs. In this period payments to Lea County include W H Castleberry 7121 for land and residence, E H Power 50 for removal of a sign, Walter F Dyar 3148 for land and improvements, and Annie B Oglesby 391 for land and move sign.

Trial Opens Wednesday In Fla. Rape Case Of Black Coed
