Carl Crutchfield of Lovington was elected deputy district governor of Lions District 40 X at the New Mexico Lions convention in Farmington. He won after a tied ballot with Bill Siegenthaler and returned home for his father’s death. Lovington delegates called the convention a success and planned to return tonight.

An 18 year old prisoner held on a murder charge shot a deputy taking him to a psychiatrist near Santa Fe High School and fled with the officer's pistol. The deputy sheriff Manuel Roybal was shot in the cheek and hospitalized in fair condition as a manhunt involved prison guards city police and sheriff's deputies. The prisoner Tobias Ortega was in custody for the Oct 16 1961 murder of Lucille Bruce and was to undergo psychiatric examination with a sanity hearing scheduled next month.
A federal grand jury indicted James R. Hoffa and seven others on charges of fraudulently obtaining about 20 million dollars in loans from the Teamsters pension fund and diverting over 1 million for personal use. The case ties funds to Hoffa’s Florida real estate venture and alleges deception of trustees of the Central States Southeast and Southwest Areas Pension Fund. The indictments followed a two year FBI and Justice Department investigation centering on loans to companies in six states, many in the Miami area.
President Kennedy met with 100 prominent executives in the White House East Room to press for voluntary desegregation of private facilities in the South. He signaled possible federal action, including broad civil rights legislation, and outlined steps to review federal construction for nondiscrimination.

At White Sands Missile Range, drivers halt for missiles overhead while a 15 000-strong workforce maintains the site. President Kennedy will tour the range witnessing two firings and viewing labs and electronic equipment as heat wind and dust challenge operations. The 100 by 40 mile fenced range lies between El Paso and Albuquerque with a $100 million annual payroll.
