North Viet Nam antiaircraft guns downed two more U S Navy planes killing all five crewmen in the heaviest loss since raids began. Ground fighting brought a major setback for U S forces as 160 government troops were killed wounded or missing near Pleiku Province.
Memorial Day and end of school celebrations plus the Lovington Country Club’s anniversary filled a weekend with multiple events. The country club floor show topped the acts with Erma Lee Caldwell, Bill Chandler, the Phillip Runnels Combo, and a Samoa finale praised by attendees. John Easley and Doc and Duff Smith also performed, while Hoyt Caldwell hosted an elevated program and a lighthearted chuckle closed the column.
President Johnson announced the withdrawal of 2,000 U S Marines from the Dominican Republic during his 43rd formal news conference. He stressed that a very strong and sustained effort remains necessary to restore peace in the troubled nation.
UPI reports that astronauts James McDivitt and Edward White won preliminary approval for a four day Gemini 4 space walk to begin Thursday. The crew will launch at 9 a.m. EST and pause training for rest and final plan revisions.
Marina Oswald, widow of Lee Harvey Oswald, wed Kenneth Jess Porter in a small Fate Texas justice of the peace office after a confidential press conference at her Richardson home. The couple, 24 and 27 respectively, declined further comment as they left for an undisclosed retreat.
Gerald Phillip Hodgkins aged 21 of 32214 E Ave A Lovington was arrested by Lea County Sheriff's officers Tuesday evening on forgery charges. Hodgkins pled not guilty in Justice of Peace Drayton Wasson s court and was held in lieu of a $1,000 bond.
Forecast for Carlsbad Lovington Clovis Tucumcari and Las Vegas calls for mostly fair skies today tonight and Thursday with little temperature change. A slight cooling tonight and Thursday in central portions with Carlsbad around 60 to 64 Lovington 62 to 64 Clovis 55 to 85 Tucumcari 56 to 86 Las Vegas 42 to 75.
About 475 school employees and spouses gathered at Taylor Junior High School last Saturday night for a banquet honoring Pannell in his swan song year.
The Mothers Auxiliary of Boy Scout Troop 44 sponsored by Lovington Rotary plans a 9:00 a.m. rummage sale Saturday at the old Chamber of Commerce building, 101 N Main. Items needed include old furniture, clothing, baby clothes, and costume jewelry. Donations can be arranged by contacting Mrs. Harold Baer at 396-4972 or dropped at the building Thursday after 9:00 a.m. Proceeds will fund a Six Flags Over Texas trip for Troop 44 and the End-of-School Banquet.
