Dr R E Smith Sr becomes Lovington's city commissioner replacing Glenn Adams who resigned July 13. Smith won 576 votes about 78 percent of 736 ballots cast, defeating Norma Marrs and Helen Parsons who pursued second and third. Adams received 33 write ins. four others voted write in. Polls closed after a lengthy tally with Adams attempting to speak during a postponed result reading.
Sun Queen Miss Kyle Barnhouse will judge personality and appearance while Rich Anderson and Elmer Helper join in horsemanship judging. Entry blanks available at Lea County chambers. contestants must be single, 16 to 21, Lea County residents. Scholarship prize plus $75 from the fair. entries due by Friday noon August 10 1973.
Lovington High School announces the first 1973 Big Blue Band rehearsal at 9:00 a.m. August 1 in the Band Building with 95 to 100 members expected. Taylor Junior High Advanced Band and Central JHS Band also begin August 1 at 9:00 and 8:30 a.m. respectively, inviting new seventh to ninth graders to join and audition for the Lea County Fair Parade. Philadelphia born constitutional scholar Charles Alan Wright says he will present a "good answer" in court to the subpoena fight over the Watergate tapes. Wright, hired by Nixon at $150 a day, declined to reveal his full view but defended the president's actions as constitutionally sound and urged patience as the case moves toward the August 7 hearing before Judge Sirica.

The Annual Cotton Extravaganza will be held August 16 at 4 00 p.m. at the Lea County Fair Building. Contestants 18 and over may enter by August 9 at 5 00 p.m. Entries are due at the Lea County Farm and Livestock Bureau Office. Two county winners from casual time and evening wear will advance to the State contest in Albuquerque. A county only under 18 category exists. The event is supported by Lea County cotton farmers.
UPI reports Senator Domenici says New Mexico will receive 3.5 million in federal aid highway funds for 1974, with total federal highway aid to the state over three years reaching 138.6 million. Final allocations depend on conference committee actions and presidential approval.
Billy Gholson, longtime Lovington resident and former Wagon Wheel Drive In operator, died Friday while en route to a Houston hospital after an on the job electrocution. He lived in Pecos, Texas, recently. Survived by wife Linda and children Melissa and Brad. Funeral arrangements pending.
A three year old King Penguin once named Peter Penguin at Ocean Geocent Exhibit on Atlantic City pier was renamed Patricia Hamid Jr. The bird turned out to be a female and is incubating an egg. Officials say hatching such eggs in captivity is rare.
Gov. Bruce King says New Mexico should tighten campaign finance reporting and considers spending limits and contribution caps. He notes difficulty of legislation but favors more personal voter contact and reports no out of state funds in his 1970 bid. Records show Domenici and Montoya faced out of state money questions. King credits King Brothers Ranch and local donors as his main support.
Howell Construction Company secures the second contract worth 276,111 dollars to build a 55 unit trailer park with bath house and sewer system on the Mescalero Apache Indian reservation near Cloudcroft New Mexico. The project began July 2 and aims for completion by January 1 with five workers on site at 8 000 feet elevation on Highway 24 10 miles north of Cloudcroft.
