The Lovington city election looms as a formality with disputes around Glenn Adams on the city commission. The paper urges replacing Adams with R E Smith Sr citing Smith’s long service and knowledge of Lovington. Mayor Skalenda and Commissioner Denton near retirement as other turnover looms. Joe Smith and James Robinson also edge toward retirement.
A special Lovington city election is set for tomorrow to fill a vacancy the city says exists after former commissioner Glenn Adams resigned on Friday July 13. Candidates are Dr. R E Smith Norma Marrs Bates Lawson and Helen Parson Jo Bensons name appears on ballot but she withdrew over a conflict with her husband Fire Chief Wayne Benson. Adams is contesting his resignation and may run as a write in while the city could appoint the winner to fill the vacancy. legal questions and potential removal actions loom over Adams.
United Press International reports a nationwide beef shortage predicted for next week with the Agriculture Department warning of beef price rises in seven weeks. Industry leaders say production cuts and Phase IV price ceilings are strangling supply from Texas to the Midwest.
New Mexico meat packers feed lots and wholesalers split on beef shortages. Bill Stone of Texas Feed Lots foresees a shortage period but others report current sales and no oversupply. One large operation fears withholding cattle from August through Sept 12 when the price freeze ends.
Widely scattered afternoon and night time thundershowers expected today and Friday. Showers most numerous and possibly heavy in the western portion. Warmer temperatures with regional highs from the upper 80s to mid 90s and lows in the 60s. Key readings include Tucumcari 88 63 90 and Las Cruces 95 65 96.

Delmo Williams 37 of Lovington died Tuesday from a rig accident about 22 miles from Carlsbad in Dark Canyon. He was reportedly struck by a slipping pin and tongs, breaking both legs, and died instantly. Body flown to Waldron Arkansas for rites Wednesday. Survivors include father William Williams and siblings Ed, W M, Delbert, two sisters, and cousins in Lovington.
Strong winds up to 80 mph whipped across Elephant Butte Lake in New Mexico sinking more than 160 boats in the main marina late Wednesday.
The Senate House conference committee on the Atomic Energy Commission Public Works Appropriations Bill approved 4.2 million in New Mexico projects. Los Alamos science center funding drew praise from Sen. Montoya, who noted continued support for geotherm and energy research, Brantley Dam, Se eas Plaza River Project, and Elephant Butte. Powerfully, storm damage at Elephant Butte and Hot Springs Marina caused extensive losses, with hundreds of boats sunk or damaged and up to thousands of gallons of gasoline spilled, while weather officials labeled the storm locally severe but limited in reach.

Two Colorado teenagers on a motorcycle were killed when they ran a stop sign and collided with a semitrailer north of Deming New Mexico. The riders were Lawrence E. Smith Jr. 15 and Stephen A. Jolson, both of Steamboat Springs. The semi driver Louis E. Miller 38 of Silver City was not injured.
Herbert Rainer, 47, was cleaning a large tank at Piel's brewery in Brooklyn when he became unconscious. Police emergency squad removed him and he was listed in fair condition at a hospital.
Bates Lawson of Lovington has filed for a seat on the Lovington City Commission. A former service station operator and longtime public school worker, Lawson and his wife Hazel are parents of six. Their children live in Lovington, Odessa, San Angelo, Eunice, and Las Vegas. Lawson pledges to work for good government and citizens’ interests.
