Reese Greaves, Lovington justice of the peace for six and a half years, will serve temporarily as Lovington postmaster starting August 2, replacing Mamie Love after 28 years. Greaves resigns as justice of the peace. Drayford Wasson is named to fill his unexpired term as Lea County official and Lovington police judge. Wasson has a long background in farming, education, and public service in New Mexico and Bolivia.

Balloon launch delayed after wind tears hole in giant craft
A gust ripped a hole in a large polyethylene balloon 10 minutes before its unmanned photographic mission over central New Mexico. Holloman AFB plans a dawn launch Monday from Artesia or possibly Hobbs or another site, as White Sands Missile Range approves timing. The $12,000 balloon, one of the largest ever, carries cameras in a nine foot gondola to photograph wing targets from 100000 feet as B57 aircraft fly beneath it.

Man Killed In Hwy 285 Wreck Near Roswell
ROSWELL United Press. Paul Frank Romero 36 of Santa Fe died in a pre dawn crash on U S 285 about 50 miles north of Roswell. He apparently was the driver thrown from the car as it overturned four and a half times. Mariano C DeBaca 27 of Santa Fe was hospitalized with back injuries. State police said the car was speeding when it left the road, rolled down the shoulder and skidded broadside before overturning.

14 Year Old Boy Slays Companion Over Bike Grips
In San Antonio a 14 year old killed another 14 year old during an argument over bicycle handlebar grips. Police say Johnny Damron took grips from the other boy and was shot with a .22 rifle when the other youth returned armed. Damron died from a bullet near his heart and the shooter admitted the killing.

Woman Receives Jail Term For Accident In Lovington
Mrs. Dorothy E. Steadham 48 of Monument was jailed 30 days and fined 100 dollars for reckless driving after pleading not guilty but found guilty by Justice Reese Greaves for a traffic crash on April 23 on S Main Lovington. She struck another vehicle injuring three girls and was hospitalized. Her attorney said the verdict will be appealed and she remained jailed on a 1000 dollar appeal bond.
