R L Pinky Jones senior vice president at Liberty National Bank resigned yesterday and will move to Ruidoso with his family. He has purchased the High County Agency, an insurance and real estate firm, and expects to relocate in about two weeks. The Jonses already own a summer home in a southern New Mexico mountain resort and will live there until a permanent home is bought. Jones served 18 years at Liberty after joining in 1955 following time with Lovington schools starting as a coach in 1941.
Five candidates appear on the ballot to fill city commissioner Glenn Adams's vacancy after Joe Pinson withdraws. Lawson returns to five contenders as filing closes and ballot order is set. The mock election, aligned with city rules, will see the winner appointed by the four remaining commissioners to serve until February 1974, with potential reappointment to finish Adams's term.
Lovington Park Lake swans receive four official names from a public “Name the Swans” contest judged by John Easley and Grace Beauchamp. Winners Tad and Tish earned a 50 dollar savings bond. Pete and Tillie also receive 50 dollars.
White House says Nixon's Watergate tapes have not been edited. Nixon became the first president in 166 years to be subpoenaed for taped conversations and documents related to the inquiry. Senate and Watergate prosecutors pursue the subpoenas while White House officials study responses. Senator Baker says Nixon may face court tests if he does not comply. Senator Ervin denounces Nixon's stance as regrettable and hopes tapes would shed light.
Lea County must repay about 396 thousand dollars after Washington said revenue sharing overpaid for the first three entitlement periods. Next month 258,314 dollars is due, with the remainder cut from future checks until the deficit is covered, affecting rodeo ground seating funds.
Ken Kingsbury was terminated as Clovis Police Chief by a 6-1 secret ballot after a 2.5 hour executive session. The commission then asked for his resignation following union representation talks, with Sheriff Bob Stephens not naming an acting chief that night.

Goodyear Aerospace of Akron donated a 1950s inflatebird aircraft to the Franklin Institute. The 19 foot inflatable plane could be carried in a seven foot by several inch container and powered by a small engine with a top speed around 70 mph. The military reportedly rejected the concept as impractical.
Visiting German couple Gunter and Anne Liese Nolte stay with American Host Program hosts in Tatum for five weeks. They tour the oil patch, Carlsbad Caverns, a square dance and ranch life, then travel to Arkansas, California, Utah and New York before returning home.
