Shearman of Lovington High School is one of four student trainees at the School of Aerospace Medicine Brooks Air Force Base Texas He received a student trainee award for his National Science Fair project Isolation of Erythropoietin He plans to gain practical experience in the Biodynamics Branch under Dr Sidney D Leverett This is his second Science Fair trip and he previously earned an American Pharmaceutical Association Award He is active in DeMolay the National Honor Society Explorers and is president elect of the Student Council

Peter Hansel James Rook, 29, a well dressed Englishman, was jailed in Dallas after admitting writing 150000 in bad checks since March. He claimed he came to the United States because Americans are gullible and said he had spent nearly all of it. Police say similar charges will be filed in Beverly Hills. He speaks five languages and holds an electronics engineering degree. He had married a Dallas divorcee with two children who left him after he claimed to be a rich man.
Graveside services were held in Kermit Texas on Tuesday afternoon for Mrs Lucretia Rose Jack 81 mother of Mrs Mary Odell Parks of Lovington. The Rev Lyle Sharp officiated. Born October 16 1882 in Frankfort Kentucky she died in Hobbs Friday. She was a farmer and longtime Lovington resident. Surviving are two sons Marion Hugh Jack Jr of Ponca City Oklahoma Monty G Jack with the Air Force in Japan and nine grandchildren.
The State moves to return Sam Sheppard to prison for the 1954 bludgeon murder of his first wife. He was released from Ohio Penitentiary after a federal judge ruled constitutional rights violated and ordered a new Cleveland trial. He honeymooned in New York with his German fiancée when the action began.

Government troops with helicopters rockets and armored vehicles trapped the rebels near Cai Be and along the Mekong River, with up to 100 enemy soldiers killed and about 200 total casualties.

At a regular city commission meeting Lovington officials voted to end the present water conservation program citing poor cooperation. City manager Wes Allen said daily use reached about 3.75 million gallons and would be reduced to roughly two million to lower pressure. An emergency supply will remain available and test wells will be investigated. The commission also approved buying 20 fire warning units for 2135 dollars delivered and installed.
Last rites set for 89 year old southeast New Mexico cattleman at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Lovington. He died Monday night at Lovington Lea General Hospital after illness that morning. Born in France, he settled in Nevada then New Mexico, where he built a successful sheep ranch and helped many start in ranching. Survivors include his wife Maria Victoria, two sons Johnny and Fermin, two daughters Mrs. Chet Tindle and Mrs. Clift Selvage, two brothers Jim and Father Peter, and nine grandchildren.
Lovington police reported a Monday afternoon traffic accident at the corner of Avenue D and 9th Street. Billy Gene Parker, 907 West Avenue N, drove a 1958 Pontiac which was damaged after braking for a left turn as a 1964 Ford truck driven by Jack Byrum failed to stop. the truck sustained no damage.
