President Eisenhower arrives in Panama to join a two day conference with 19 other heads of state. The talks focus on signing the Declaration of Panama reaffirming continental friendship and informal meetings with regional leaders.
The 1956 Farm Safety Week outlines daily themes from July 22 to July 28 with two options per day. Mrs Alta Roush reported her car on the lawn at 317 N Shipp had a new battery and a radiator stolen while she was away on a three week Louisiana vacation. Police are investigating the burglary and victim noted the missing items.
City Manager James W. Harrison releases June stats showing 33 arrests, 230 motorist assists, 21 county officer aids, 10 state police assists, five doors and windows found open, nine prowler calls, 28 disturbance calls, five fire calls, 16 escorts, 23 emergency messages, 52 traffic citations, 14 accidents checked, 638 parking meter tickets, and 47 driver examinations. Police cars logged 7,275 miles.
The United States rejected Moscow’s allegations that American Air Force bombers violated Russian air space earlier this month. The State Department delivered a note to the Soviet Embassy in Washington denying any overflight, while acknowledging two planes could have approached Russian territory.
Two men, T. E. Davis and George Williams, were arrested within 24 hours and charged with rape, one statutory. They pleaded not guilty and are held on $10,000 bond each pending a preliminary hearing before Judge John W. Green. Davis allegedly assaulted a Hobbs businessman’s wife in his upholstery shop. Williams is accused of raping a 12 year old girl at a farm north of town.
Washington according to Louis Rothschild executive director of the National Association of Retail Clothiers and Furnishers the price hike will hit tailored suits trousers topcoats and overcoats by 2 to 5.50 per garment Rothschild calls the increase overdue and ties it to a June wage increase negotiated by the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America.
Lea County awaits a second producer as a wildcat at Cabot Carbon Oil Co. No. 1 Reed indicates oil and gas in multiple beds during a drillstem test. Amerada Petroleum reports 53 barrels lead oil and 23 barrels new oil in 18 hours at North Knowles Unit. Humble Oil drills Lakes Unit near Tatum with a Pennsylvanian discovery awaiting cement. Second Pennsylvanian producer confirmed for Four Lakes Unit with Wolfcamp indications.
Hobbs police were told a battery valued at 32.95 dollars was stolen from a firm pickup truck parked in an alley behind the Firestone Store. The theft occurred during the early evening hours Thursday.
Charles Van Gorden aged 15 of Las Vegas Nev was sentenced to the reform school in Lovington by Judge John R Brand for knowingly passing bad checks. Kenneth Hoover 28 of Hobbs is held for court action after a related incident in Hobbs about a week earlier.
A Friday night storm in Lovington dropped .31 inches of rain and gusty winds. No damage was reported despite the severe weather.
The Lovington New Mexico Junior Chamber and city officials designate August 1956 as cleanup month to promote health and improve the city’s appearance. Citizens are urged to cooperate with the campaign and efforts are attested by Mayor Jerry W. Wright and City Clerk Osborne Fisher.

Reverend Shepard arrives from Mt. Vernon Illinois to lead First Christian Church in our town. He began missionary work establishing churches in surrounding areas and says his family once lived in Mt. Vernon. He married Mrs. Shepard in Belleville twenty three years ago.
Ora Cunningham, 44, of 4113 W Roxana Hobbs was fined five dollars for running a red light that caused a two car crash at Marland and Dal Paso Hobbs. David W Worley, 42 of 300 E Alston Hobbs, drove the other car. Damage to Cunningham car was sixty five dollars and to Worley’s twenty dollars.
Mrs John Frier comes home after a week in Big Spring Texas with brother H F Williamson who has been ill for some time.
Pamela Sue Huff of Bellbrook Ohio won a tax crossing battle after the New York Central Rail road dropped its appeal to the Ohio Supreme Court. The crossing near Dayton was ruled dangerous by the Ohio Public Utilities Commission following her letter to President Eisenhower that led to lights being installed. The girl who lost her father in a fatal crossing accident last year says she will be present when the lights go on, calling them her daddy's Star.
Weldon N. Bickerstaff, 44, arrested Thursday night in Hobbs on a driving while intoxicated charge after refusing to give his address. Police said he ran a stop sign and nearly struck a prowler car, and he was also charged with driving without a license.
Six Monument school bus drivers are planning to attend the state convention August 6 in Silver City at New Mexico Western College. Names include Mrs. Mack Campbell, Mrs. Lewis Evans, Mrs. Kenneth Turner, Mrs. Glenn, Mrs. Hughes and Robert Pate. Lea County is noted for high driver attendance and R N Tydings of Hobbs Public School System says Lea County is well represented.
An overloaded circuit breaker triggered a small fire at the Eagle Drive In Theatre in Hobbs early Friday. Firefighters reported damage to the breaker box and slight damage to the switch box. No damage estimate was given.
Lee Houston age 27 of 509 N Cochran Hobbs was arrested Thursday evening on a Clovis warrant for removal and concealing of mortgaged property. No additional details were available in Hobbs.
