Community leaders urge donations of cash and land to fund a non profit nursing retirement home run by the Good Samaritan Society. Builders plan to involve many residents and promise experienced, Christian guided service, with local media to disseminate information in coming weeks.
Lovington community leaders announced a kickoff banquet for August 5 to raise 90000 to fund a 60 bed nursing and retirement home costing about 400000. The project partners include private groups and the Lovington Chamber of Commerce with the Good Samaritan Society of Sioux Falls as a partner.
Lea County Clerk Effie Haldiman reports a surge in new registrations as voters prepare for the upcoming New Mexico primary on August 27 and the national general election on November 5. The county's eligible voter total now stands at 20 699 with deadlines July 29 for the primary and October 7 for the general election.
The Reed Report shows rotary rigs active in Lea County decreased to forty this week after a high of fifty and a count of forty is now reported for the Permian Basin.

Dor thy Pruit county treasurer reports $18100 earned this year from investing surplus funds in certificates of deposit issued by Lea County banks. For the 90 day period ending July 16 the $800000 surplus is split among Lovington National Bank First National Bank of Hobbs and New Mexico Bank and Trust with respective rates 4.5 4.6 and 4.5 percent.
In Tuy Hoa Vietnam a forward air controller commends pilots of the 188th Tactical Fighter Squadron for daily missions. Maj Ken Sarason Capt Chester Redmond of Albuquerque and another regular Air Force pilot hit targets identified by smoke rockets in a ravine on a flattened knoll.
The Ed Smith family at 308 West Avenue N faced another strange incident when a hidden water cutoff valve is drawn into a power mower cutting grass. The blade sent the valve through a front plate glass window and door curbing into a kitchen cabinet, narrowly missing Mrs. Smith. Last year a car crashed into their home causing heavy damage but no injuries this time.
Dessie Sawyer Democratic committeewoman of New Mexico writes to President Johnson and Senator Anderson protesting the proposed closing of Nogal village post office. Her oil and ranch holdings surround the Crossroads area in southeastern New Mexico. Fern, her Nogal daughter, says she will ask Marvin Watson how the protest will proceed.
Mary Louise Lynn 23 of 301 W. K tried a left turn when Chester Lee Hardin 17 rear ended her 1964 Chevrolet. Lynn sustained about $100 rear damage. Hardin’s vehicle was undamaged. Hardin cited for following too close.
