First rabies case hits Lovington from stray cat attack
Linda Knighton a 14 year old Lovington girl was scratched by a stray violent cat Saturday evening. She began a two week vaccination schedule. The cat was killed and sent to Santa Fe for testing. State health officials confirmed the animal carried rabies. Police and the Lea County Health Department launched a three block containment, seizing 23 animals and destroying three stray cats. Dozens more were taken to a veterinary clinic for observation with a confinement period set by Dr. L P Clarke based on last vaccination. Police urge owners to identify pets and cooperate with vaccination and confinement efforts.
