Hobbs building records show a sharp June drop from May with 12 new home permits valued at 144 500 versus 49 permits totaling 404 800 in May. June totals include 328 276 in other work, seven commercial projects at 142 986, 21 repairs 25 040, and 18 moves 15 750 while no public buildings were permitted.
Lea county farmers can register July 9 to 20 at the A S C office in Lovington for a soil bank plan limited to 1956. Part two on soil conservation may follow by fall, with payments based on a farmer’s non planted, destroyed, or fully destroyed crop portions and county averages.
The Public Health Service reports a big drop in polio cases in the first six months of 1956 with 2,656 cases versus 3,706 in the same period in 1955. Paralytic cases total 1,399 in early 1956, down from 1,482 in the prior year.
Lea County Republicans host former governor Edwin L. Mechem and other top party figures at George's in Hobbs on Monday for a public luncheon. A. A. Kemnitz and George Schubert handle arrangements. tickets cost 1.75 dollars. Betty Mann will attend to meet Republican women. Lovington attorney Howell Spear runs ticket sales.
United Press reports the nationwide steel walkout delays New Mexico's planned highway construction by at least a month. Chief Highway Engineer L. D. Wilson says the strike may cause further delays and that steel suppliers in Albuquerque El Paso and Denver halted new orders. Structural steel use will be minimized to stretch current supplies. Other states face similar effects.
In Lisbon yesterday a female matador, Patric Hayes, faced two brutal bull fights. Ferdinand knocked her down in the first and El Toro crushed her again in the second, forcing her to flee the ring after her cape was ripped away and she leapt over the barrier. The manager halted the match as she retreated bloody and frustrated.
Lovington residents are urged to attend a come and go reception honoring Mayor Jerry Wright and Lovington's new First Lady. The event is at the Youth Center from 5 30 to 8 30 Monday evening and will be open to the public.
Acting Canadian Foreign Minister Paul Martin urged Russia to agree to initial disarmament steps rather than a full plan. He told the UN Disarmament Commission that Russia’s manpower cuts still leave Soviet forces in Europe far exceeding NATO strengths.
A five member fact finding committee will hold an Albuquerque meeting mid next week to plan action on the Los Lunas Hospital and Training School situation. Hearings likely begin after July 18 due to examinations of possible patients delaying start. Governor Simms supports a free hand for the committee and backs the inquiry prompted by agency concerns.
A Houston passerby exposes an estranged wife’s kidnap hoax to regain her husband. Cathy Faris was found unharmed after a 24 hour search. the foster mother, her brother and wife, and the grandmother were jailed as police alleged the hoax aimed to win back John Faris of Amarillo.
In Los Angeles a new Oriental library of more than 50 000 volumes was opened on the University of California campus. The collection aims to support research in Asian studies with extensive holdings across classical and modern works.
Jerry Stoltz of Brownfield has acquired an interest in the Levington Press and will relocate to assume management. He is son of Sam and Mrs. Stoltz of Hobbs and is married to Wilma Heath of Las Cruces. The Stoltz family includes Jeff Craig and Jennie Kay. He has edited the Brownfield Weekly News for four years.
Berlin report cites East German Communist Youth Organization secretary Werner Felfe saying many youths in the Soviet zone oppose conversion to communism. He accuses them of flirting with the enemy and holding reactionary ideas, noting Free German Youth work has failed in schools colleges farms and factories.
Three Swiss mountaineers and three Colorado climbers join two others on a canyon ledge to salvage wreckage from United Airlines DC-7. They plan to lower bodies by rope to the canyon floor as 11 bags of remains are flown from the ledge. A separate inquest in Flagstaff ruled the TWA crash victims died accidentally.
Lea County finished its segment in 1955 and a passable road links to Carlsbad. Eddy County contract work is expected to be let in August or September, with a completion hoped soon.
Architect George Graves presented preliminary plans to enlarge Lea County Court house adding a four floor wing extending east with basement space and a new health clinic on West Jefferson. The project includes new courtrooms offices and improved heating and air conditioning with a bond issue to finance costs estimated at about a half to one million dollars.
Bids are sought for the Cashway Super Market to be built in Southern Heights Hobbs by Tootie Schnaubert. Architect George Graves says the 16 000 square foot store will sit across from Southern Heights School. Schnaubert also owns Cashway stores in Lovington and Hobbs on East Broadway.
The Meador Corporation of San Antonio plans a copper leaching plant at Scholle costing about $200,000. It will employ around 30 workers plus 50 to 60 truck drivers. The announcement follows Permanente Cement Company plans for a $10 million cement plant at Scholle.
Vice President Nixon and Mrs. Nixon arrived in Saigon to express American good wishes to the people of free Vietnam. He noted progress since his prior visit and rode through streets decorated for American-Vietnam friendship and Diem’s upcoming second anniversary in office.
Drawings for booth locations at Lea County Fair will be held Saturday July 14 at 11 a.m. in the Lovington Chamber of Commerce office due to many requests for concession space. The fair runs September 13 to 15 with limits of two concessions inside the building and two booths on the grounds. Rental rates apply. Organizations must provide name, address, and person in charge to the Chamber or attend the draw.
President Eisenhower signed a $34.6 billion military appropriation at his Gettysburg, Pennsylvania farm. The measure provides the Air Force with $900 million more than the administration requested, and Eisenhower gave no comment on the bill.
