Janie Breckon a Tatum High School student and New Mexico Future Homemaker of America delegate participated in the National Youth Conference on Natural Beauty and Conservation held in Washington DC June 26 29. More than 500 delegates from 50 states Canada and Puerto Rico attended. The opening ceremony on the White House lawn featured remarks by Mrs Lyndon B Johnson and a surprise appearance by President Johnson. Delegates toured the White House Arboretum and heard from Mrs Orville L Freeman and Secretary of Agriculture. Sessions included talks by Secretary of the Interior Udall and panels on conservation problems leading to home community actions such as kindergarten conservation education and litter bag promotion.
