UPI reports the Atlas missile flew a documented 9 054 miles to a sea target in the Indian Ocean after launching from Cape Canaveral. Officials compare the distance to previous records, noting the Soviet Union's 8 600 mile benchmark from 1960, with U S tracking awaiting confirmation of the gain.
Mrs. L. D. Gann who died at Levington Sea General Hospital Thursday morning will be laid to rest at 2 30 p m Saturday in the First Baptist Church with Rev J Samuel Phillips officiating. Interment follows in Levington cemetery. Honorary casketbearers are deacons of the church and active bearers are members of the Young Mens Class taught by Mr Gann.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr told about 2,500 integrationists in Jackson Mississippi that segregation is dead and the fight will be costly for segregationists. The rally was tied to the Jackson Non-Violent Movement as 169 Freedom Riders have been jailed trying to desegregate Mississippi sites. Justice Department suit targets Clarke and Forrest counties for voting rights violations. Governor Barnett defends local registrars while Minnesota officials visit Parchman prison to check five jailed Freedom Riders. Atlanta schools deny transfer appeals from 38 Negro students awaiting next year’s all white school placements.
The New Mexico Real Estate Commission will close its state convention with a full meeting at the Lea County Electric Co operative Building. Lem Homer aged 28 was arrested at 7 a.m. on East Jefferson Avenue by city officers and charged with simple assault. The charge was filed by Gladys Mathis. Homer reports his occupation as a porter.
Richard Mays 42 head football coach at Southwestern College Memphis drowned near Hardy Arkansas after entering swift Spring River to free his wife’s fishing line. She said he stepped into deep water to loosen the line and disappeared.
The Senior High Department invites all to an Ice Cream Social on Saturday from 6 30 to 9 p m on the East Patio. Tickets cost 50c for adults and 35c for children. All you can eat with ice cream and cake. In bad weather the event moves to the Fellowship Hall.
A Navajo mother and six children perished along with seven others in separate accidents across New Mexico on Thursday. The toll rose to 167 from 204 a year earlier as victims included a 20 year old Belen man and a 57 year old Grants man.
Sudden winds forced the Air Force to cut free the Project Banshee balloon at Hobbs Air Base. The balloon rose to 8000 feet and was deflated after winds threatened instruments, landing about 12 miles northwest of Hobbs. The test carried 500 pounds of standard explosive except for the payload.
In Moscow the Soviet Union rejected Kennedy era proposals for a nuclear test ban and urged merging talks into a general disarmament conference. Izvestia published a note by Foreign Minister Gromyko handed to U S Ambassador Thompson, reiterating Khrushchev’s troika principle and accusing the United States of preparing to resume tests. The note questioned US aims and stated no change in Soviet disarmament stance since Vienna.
George Edward Brown 30 of 511 East Adams and Q B Bailey 49 of 418 North Commercial were arrested at 3 45 p m Thursday by Sheriff Jake Fort and Deputy Bill White. Brown faced assault and battery and Bailey strong arm robbery while Jim Parker 55 of 513 West Avenue I was later arrested at 4 15 p m linked to the same case on assault with a deadly weapon and carrying a deadly weapon. Parker listed as junk dealer. All three jailed with $1 000 bonds to appear before Peace Justice Reese Greaves.
A pulling rig caught fire east of here late this morning and burned extensively. Lovington fire department arrived to extinguish the blaze but the equipment suffered heavy damage. The rig was reportedly owned by Bateman and Whitsitt.
The First Christian Church joins the Harvesting For Christ campaign sponsored by Standard Publishing. The aim is to boost Bible School attendance over the nine weeks in July and August compared with last year, when average attendance was 106 and 133 attended last Sunday. A 160 goal is set for remaining Sundays. Bible School begins each Sunday at 9:45 a.m.
A 2296 acre tract in the 1700 block of West Broadway Place was sold Thursday to Clifford Bates of Hobbs. The sale, at a $1000 per acre appraised value, was conducted by Clifford Stevenson, State Land Office fieldman, at the courthouse west entrance.
Funeral services for Robbie Calvin Allen 13 son of Mr and Mrs Charles L Allen will be held at 10 am Saturday at the Smith Yarbro Funeral Chapel. The Rev Jim Anders of Hillcrest Baptist Church will officiate with burial in Lovington Cemetery. Robbie born June 8 1948 in East Liverpool Ohio is survived by his parents a sister Carolyn 14 and grandmothers Mrs Daniel Allen and Mrs Maggie Mitchell.
