SANTA FE RP reports fourteen of the 1,607 liquor license holders did not renew their licenses and are officially closed. Liquor director A L McCulloch said nineteen others were closed temporarily Monday but paid taxes and reopened. Most non renewals stemmed from failure to meet the four percent gross receipts tax for bars in municipal areas and three percent in county or unincorporated areas.
A state hired firm recommends New Mexico drop rigid foundation programs and instead divide public school funds among 89 districts. The proposal supports a district by district appropriation and a legislative aid to set sums, citing inflexibility of fixed formulas. Authors include Petty Wiley and Gott.
Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America reports one third completion of its 102 mile 30 inch Permian extension from Lea County New Mexico to Ward Winkler Counties West Texas as part of a 1968 expansion plan. Building permits in June totaled 77 750 with several residential and garage additions.

The Civic Projects Advisory Council held its regular meeting at Western Grill as new officers took office led by president Mrs Earline Adams of Beta Sigma Phi. Secretary is Mrs Valerie Tiernan and vice president is Mrs Audean Davis. Peggy Pevey outlined a fair booth art project with local artists to create charcoal drawings. Mrs Davis reported nursing home approval and a fundraising drive to start building it. Sororities are inactive aside from socials. ESA rep Helen Taylor and Lovington Daily Leader's W H Graham attended. A monthly meeting will set plans for the fair.
Wayne Hildebrand 18 of Big Spring Texas faces involuntary manslaughter charges for the fatal shooting of Johnny Glascock 18 at the Cochran home in Lovington. Bond set at 3000. arraignment scheduled July 8 before Justice Louis C Bryan. Glascock died from a right eye wound. funeral held at North Side Baptist Church with Maxwell Lodge Oddfellows officiating.
Lovington fans will hear the Pony League announce the All Stars and award trophies and the season batting champion. The Yankees face the Cardinals at 5 30 p.m. with the Braves versus Dodgers in the second game as Ray Lovejoy notes festive plans and a possible Pony League tournament return to Lovington from Pecos. The league includes Kermit Andrews and Pecos, with July 12 through July 22 set for the event.
Traffic deaths edged up on the first full day of the Independence Day weekend, reaching 44 nationwide. The National Safety Council warned 700 to 800 may die in four days, as dry weather spurred holiday travel beginning Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Saidallah Bishara Sirhan says two cars trailed him for six miles on the Pasadena Freeway before dawn firing at his car. A bullet hit a coat and another grazed the door as officers questioned him at the Pasadena police station. The incident follows a day of traffic death statistics and Fourth of July holiday counts.
A 1962 Pontiac driven by 16 year old Steve Wayne Marrs of 1118 West Aspen collided with a parked 1965 Ford owned by Raymond M. Raines at Ninth Street near Tyler Avenue. Raines received an improper parking ticket and Marrs a careless driving citation. Estimated damage: $1500 to the Ford and $1000 to the Pontiac. Two passengers were aboard the Pontiac.
Mrs Joyce Caudle is named Lucky Shopper this week. She is pictured with Rudy Gutierrez at Turner's store where she was chosen. Caudle, a Midland native, is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Caudle and is related to local residents.
Edwin David Holt 72 a long time Tatum area resident died in Lovington General Hospital. He lived with wife Edna for about 46 years and is survived by a daughter a brother five sisters and two great grandchildren. Services set for 4:00 p.m. Friday at First Baptist Church Tatum with burial in Tatum Cemetery.
A House Agriculture Committee review of 256 counties in 20 states designated as emergency hunger areas reports responses from 181 counties. It notes few current starvation cases, widespread malnutrition, and attributes problems to education and food programs rather than lack of food.
