Typhoon Winnie battered Manila and Northern Luzon with 118 mile per hour winds the strongest storm to hit the islands since 1852. Nineteen people were reported dead as Winnie moved across the South China Sea toward Red China.
Capt Alfred Svenson the only American to defect to East Germany testified at his court martial that Communist secret police forced him to declare his desire to be a Communist and threatened to try him as an American spy if he did not comply He said drugs were given to him and that the interview was arranged by East German journalists and associates in East Berlin.

Lea County Democrats met in Lovington last night electing Jess Parker of Hobbs as county chair for two years. They selected 78 delegates to the State Platform Convention in Albuquerque on July 18 and rejected nine resolutions from the Lovington delegation. Lt Gov Mack Easley announced he will step down as county chairman after eight years, and a county central committee meeting followed to formalize the new slate.
Father Lucian Harkins, longtime pastor of St. Thomas Church in Lovington, died of a heart attack Monday after arriving in Dublin during a vacation marking his 25th year in the priesthood. He was 36. Burial is planned in Indiana at Franciscan Cemetery Mt. St. Francis. a memorial Mass was set for Lovington. He served as pastor here for nine years and had recently completed 25 years in the priesthood.
In Lansing Michigan Gov George Romney says Barry Goldwater failed to answer questions he had raised nine months earlier and notes remaining concerns about the platform. Romney vows Michigan delegates will not be released before the first ballot while Goldwater seeks ample support amid Illinois wins.

Two twin engine Navy anti submarine planes collide during training near Los Alamitos. Five crewmen aboard presumed dead with one body recovered. A 43 man offshore oil rig, the C. T. Baker, exploded and sank in 15 minutes 78 miles southwest of Morgan City Louisiana after hitting a gas pocket at 684 feet. Coast Guard says two bodies found, 18 missing. 23 escaped with some burned. Readings and Bates Drilling Co. owned the vessel, drilling for Pan American and Texaco.

Atty. Gen. Robert F. Kennedy met for about an hour with Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski in Czestochowa Poland during his tour of Communist Poland. Kennedy described the private lunch discussion as thorough and general. He joined a large crowd at the monastery and later attended Mass at Our Lady of Czestochowa Chapel.
Funeral services for Mrs. George Essman, mother of Thomas Essman, will be held in Reedley California. The service is under Cair Funeral Home direction and set for July 1 at 10:00 am. The Essman family includes Theo Essman of Eunice.
