A humorous spoof argues aging improves wives with marriage, comparing wives to cars and praising matured partners for practicality and loyalty. The piece pivots to a social note praising Individual vigor over mass welfare, attributed to GEORGE CHAMPION.
The first 1968 criminal docket in Lovington will try 25 cases before District Judges Kermit Nash and Caswell Neal, including two murder counts. Trials run Wednesday January 31 through February 29 with 9 am sessions, covering both jury and non-jury matters.
North Korea said it is ready for combat and will deem any U N Security Council resolution against the USS Pueblo null and void. Pyongyang denounced the council’s discussion of the seizure and the 83 crewmen as illegal and without right to intervene.
Mary Beth Eley a Hobbs based speech therapist works two days weekly with Lovington Lea County schools and teaches seven private students afternoons. She arrived in Hobbs in July and began Lovington work in November after completing four years college study at Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts. Her first Lea County post she found through a Lovington friend and enjoys the move despite missing trees and weather remarks.
Pastor Harry Brooks will give an address at the Brotherhood meeting after a 6:30 meal. The program is directed by Bill Lewis with Brooks, a former entertainer now serving in Southeastern New Mexico pastorates.
A total of 76 Lovington Schools students earned honor roll for the second nine weeks of the 1967 68 academic year. Seniors listed include Durward Sherman Benham Jr Donald Clayton Camp and others with top grades. Juniors named are Charles Anthony Carlton Aubrey Ann Doss Yvone de Rose Elliott Edward Lewis Hagan Glenn Eric Hager and more.
Dr. Dorothy Lee the county coroner links the rainbow pill diet to several southeastern New Mexico deaths. She notes victims were on the regimen, warns dangers arise from dosage and pill combinations without physician supervision. Several doctors in Hobbs Roswell Clovis Portales Carlsbad Artesia are mentioned as providers, with Dr Russell C Henry of Portland credited for raising attention.
Twenty men named by the county State Director must report to the local board on February 26 1968 for induction into the United States Army. Inductees include Martin J. Cabrera Wayne C Hicks and Michael C Dellinges with volunteers L Powers Rodney C Garrett Robert E Jones and Mike S. Also announced by orders chaired by J P Morgan.
Santa Fe AP reports a special audit of the state Office of Economic Opportunity cites inadequate administrative practices and questionable expense payments. The audit traces back to September 1965 when the OEO began operations as Arthur Ortiz leads an effort to reform the agency after Governor ordered changes amid criticism of former director Robert Garcia. Garcia was demoted and Ortiz reports he fired Garcia for not reporting to the new post.
