The New Mexico Temperance League condemned a bill by State Sen. Fabian Chavez to lift population quotas for liquor licenses in hotels motels and restaurants. League secretary D R Trolinger said the measure aims to remove all licensing restrictions and other limits.
Funeral services are pending at Griffin Funeral Home in Hobbs for seven year old Danny Sanders son of Mr and Mrs Billy Dean Sanders of Longmont Colorado He died at a Longmont hospital after a broken arm and anesthetic complications The body was brought to Hobbs for services and relatives were to be notified His paternal grandparents are Mr and Mrs Ed Sanders of Hobbs and his maternal grandmother is Mrs Floy Brake formerly of Hobbs and Lovington now of Andrews
Havana reports say New York lawyer James B. Donovan flew in to press Castro for the release of scores of Americans jailed in Cuba. Donovan, noted for negotiating the Bay of Pigs prisoners exchange, arrived on a Pan Am DC3 and met by Maj. Rene Vallejo.
A county wide meeting is scheduled for Tuesday January 29 at 7 p.m. in the Lea County Courthouse basement to discuss a federal crop insurance program. Cecil McPherson of the Lea County Farm and Livestock Bureau invites all interested farmers. Rolf Moe will explain the program and answer questions. Le Davis of Lovington, Pecos Valley Sugar Beet Association director, will report on the sugar situation.
Harold Decker president of the Independent Petroleum Association of America in Houston argues President Kennedy's oil tax proposals would raise taxes by 280 million dollars and curb drilling by over 5 000 wells yearly. He warns the plan would erode U S petroleum self sufficiency and depress industry already in a downturn.
The New Mexico Medical Society urges all residents to consider Type III vaccine to eliminate the carrier condition. Dr. Hugh B. Woodward notes minimal polio association risk, citing a GI Surgeon General report of 11 compatible cases among over 15 million doses, and stresses adults face very small risk. Sabin vaccine protects the individual and helps prevent virus transmission.
President Kennedy ordered a temporary halt to underground atomic testing in Nevada to aid ongoing negotiations with the Soviet Union and Britain. He said the move is not a long-term moratorium and that the U S may resume tests if no workable agreement is reached. Talks will continue with rounds set in New York and a Geneva conference planned for February 12.
The third Sabin oral polio vaccine dose will be offered in Lovington and Lea County with clinics at Lovington High School cafeteria Lea Elementary School and Tatum Schools from 1 to 5 p.m. The dose aims to protect against Type III poliomyelitis and is advised for everyone under 31 whether or not they completed the first two doses.
Farmers are invited to a general sugar beet meeting in Lea County Farm Bureau office on Monday January 28 at 7 30 p m. County Agent Jim Gilstrap notes interest from New Mexico Pecos Valley Sugar Beet Association and several companies in data on beet yields sugar content and quality. Planting should run February through April with six growers on five to ten acres each to coordinate practices and seed supply.
Fair conditions continue in Lovington through Sunday night. Temperatures fall with a high near 35 degrees Sunday and a low around 10 degrees Sunday night.
