Dock workers begin ballots on a settlement approved by leaders and management to end an $800 million 32 day walkout. Reports from Portland Maine show early approval while New Orleans workers seek local adjustments before full implementation nationwide.
Deputy John Pennell reports four Texans from Yoakum and Edna were charged with breaking and entering five Tatum businesses on January 16. The group rented a house January 13 and fled before dawn. Bond set at 2000 each. three arraigned in Trinity court and returned to Lea County jail after failure to post bond. About 111.7 of 206 dollars recoverable. Victims include Lea County Electric Cooperative and five other shops in Tatum.
Three Lovington men Dr Kenneth Osborn optometrist Carl Henderson theatre owner Roger Smith oilman announced their bids for the Lovington School Board. They face incumbents Hobby Gann and Bette Taylor with Taylor unopposed from Mallamar Osborn cites desire for continued strong schools and broader representation while Henderson pushes liaison and budget efficiency and Smith seeks more oil industry input and parent representation.
A Pan American flight brought 98 Cuban and Cuban American refugees to Miami amid reports of food shortages and rising anti Castro sentiment in Cuba. Passengers included 24 men 39 women 24 boys and 17 girls. They spoke of secret executions and family separations while awaiting further evacuations and a relief shipment from Havana.
Two noon accidents caused about 650 dollars in damage to three vehicles and slight injuries to a pedestrian. A 1959 Chevrolet pickup driven by James Vann Reed struck a parked 1960 Ford pickup, pushing it into a 1961 Ford sedan. Reed received a reckless driving citation.

The North Sea County March of Dimes Dance sponsored by Mrs. Desstie Sawyer will be held Saturday February 9 at the Tatum Community Building. Norman Petty Trio of Clovis will perform and five prizes will be awarded. Governor Jack Campbell and other state officials plan to attend. The dance begins at 8 p.m. and proceeds go to the March of Dimes.
