A weekend snow burst in Lovington and Eastern New Mexico turned into a sunny, springlike day. Forecasters were surprised, and residents joked about the misjudged storm while county officials discussed investing dormant bank funds with county schools.
The New Mexico legislature returns for its third week with bills to strengthen the personnel act regulate lobbyists and adjust state school fund distribution. Rep Tom Slaughter proposes a corrective personnel act measure while Rep William Shrecengost backs reform. Rep David Cargo pushes a lobbyist registration and accountability bill. Sen Albert Greer introduces a school funding formula shift from districts to individual schools Farmington Democrat Greer aims to base allocations on school level rather than district size.
Filing for two Lovington School Board seats in the February 5 election is due today at 4 p.m. Incumbents Hobby Gann and Mrs. Bette Taylor are the only candidates so far. Gann, a 30 year Lovington rancher and businessman, has served 23 years on the board and is current secretary. Taylor, widow of Kyle Taylor, has long been active in Mallamar community affairs and was appointed to fill a vacancy after his death in October 1961.

Maxwell Carey reports a night-time robbery at the Farr's Supermarket on January 17. A gunman forced Carey to drive to the store, opened the safe, and took most of the cash while leaving $8,000 in checks. The couple was then sent to a nearby school before being told to walk home.
President Kennedy warned Congress a tax cut could avert a recession and prevent a record peacetime deficit. He urged a $6 billion tax cut with broader reforms, while critics warned large spending cuts might harm national security and defense.

A pre-dawn explosion near East Berlin's government compound startled the area where Soviet Premier Khrushchev stayed during the East German party congress. West Berlin police reported a strong blast opposite the Wilhelmshruhe station about 3:15 am, with no confirmed cause. Khrushchev and Ulbricht appeared at the congress finale, dismissing any threat to their safety.
Stewart Alsop reports Stevenson told the Security Council to consider giving up Guantanamo and other bases if it would lead to dismantling Russian missile sites in Cuba. The White House declined to comment, while Alsop defends the piece as a fair account of Stevenson's position and strategy.
Funeral services for Dan Waggoner Hardin 68 are at 2 p.m. at Soth Yar bro Funeral Home Chapel. He died Sunday morning at his home in Lovington after a heart attack. Burial is Lovington Cemetery with pallbearers named. honorary pallbearers include many friends. Survived by wife Anna Belle two sons Daymon and Ross a step son Bill Huckabee a brother O G Hardin and four grandchildren.
The Lovington City Commission will administer oath of office to three new members Malcolm Wright A L Hahn and J V Veach Payne at the 7 p m meeting in city hall The board will be reorganized fill appointive offices set yearly meeting dates discuss water well drilling and pay bills as part of the agenda Holdover members are R L Pinky Jones and Slim Hester.
