Dist. Judge Kermit E. Nash of Hobbs disqualified himself from presiding over the criminal contempt case against two Lovington attorneys Merrill Norton and Bart Ingraham. The hearing, tied to a dispute over 225 sections of ranchland and the National Livestock Company, is to be heard by Judge George Reese of Roswell on January 31 after a delay from December 22.

A public hearing on the Contractors' Licensing Bonding Act will be held in Santa Fe on Tuesday at 8 a.m. before the House Natural Resources Committee. Local contractors unable to attend may join a Saturday meeting at 7 p.m. at the Motel Stevens in Carlsbad to discuss the matter.
An 81 year old Lea County rancher Clyde Allen Browning was killed in a two car crash 40 miles west of Tatum on U S 380. His son Buzzy Browning, injured, and Robert L. McPherson of Midland died in the same wreck. Browning funeral arrangements are pending.
New Mexico Junior College President H C Pannell spoke to Lovington Rotarians outlining a goal of full accreditation within two years. He said NMJC may affiliate for immediate accreditation but prefers independent status and expects formal recognition from regional accrediting bodies. Phase I construction includes six buildings, bonds to be sold Feb 4, and completion by Sept 4 to open thereafter.
Lovington NMJC outlines Phase I to Phase III construction including an administration and science building plus vocational units, central mechanical, and warehouse funded by 2 million of last year's bonds and 675000 in federal aid. Phase II adds classroom arts library and physical education facilities with Phase III a student center.
A 36 year old Wichita man Guy Wilman Holloway Jr is jailed in Lea County after a late night shooting on U S Highway 180 west of Hobbs. Holloway allegedly robbed hitchhiker Lones Joshua Wynn of Harlan Kentucky and fired four shots hitting Wynn in the back with a .22 rifle. Wynn is in fair condition at Lea General Hospital Hobbs. Holloway was captured at Carlsbad and returned to Lovington for booking.
March of Dimes officials call Lovington Coffee Day a big success as $190 is raised in a one day drive. Cafes and merchants donated coffee proceeds with many local names listed including Western Grill New Mexico Bank & Trust and Rancho Grande. March of Dimes thanks participants for fund-raising effort.
