A Saturday morning snow storm driven by a cold arctic north wind produced brief snowfall from about 7:15 to 10 a.m. before sun and warmth ended the snow. Temperatures fell to 2 degrees by 5 a.m., then hovered in the low 20s with a near zero expected tonight. The forecast called for cold cloudy skies and warming in the afternoon.
Dr Kenneth Osborn announces a three man building committee for the College of Southwest to plan the first permanent structure on the Hobbs Lovington highway location. Members are Jack Maddox W Lee Greebon and Rev Billy Barber with ex officio board leaders. Congregations fund a house to house religious survey in Roswell with 750 volunteers from 21 churches.
Albuquerque UPI Franklin Padilla Jr president of the New Mexico Retail Liquor Dealers Association opposes ending the fair trade wholesale price law and backs strict enforcement. State Sen Fabian Chavez proposes a new liquor authority abolishing the 17 percent wholesale markup and expanding licenses for motels and hotels. Padilla says removing the markup harms small retailers while wholesalers report 16.4 percent average costs and retailers show 25 percent markup after federal tax shifts. The public license cap is blamed on citizen groups ministers and newspapers.
Mainichi Shimbun reported U S and Japanese officials discussed Red China having built two atomic bombs and four reactors at a Security Consultative Committee meeting in Tokyo. Officials warned the bombs were experimental and Pekin would need about a decade to deploy them.
A disaster clinic sponsored by the American Red Cross is slated for Friday January 25 at the Lea County Electric Cooperative meeting room with sessions from 4 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Grace Fossette of the Red Cross will lead the training alongside Harvey Markley coordinating.
Three separate collisions in Lovington Friday and Saturday caused about $3200 in damage to eight vehicles. A 1960 Chevrolet driven by Bill Richard McKown struck three pickups at Sea Pumping Service, injuring $1700 total damage and earning a DUI citation.

The New Mexico Medical Society launches a statewide drive to administer Sabin Oral Polio Vaccine on January 27 in 31 counties, with 26 counties giving the final third dose. Hospitals and clinics will operate 1 to 5 p.m. at Lovington sites. A February 3 makeup day is planned. The effort involves multiple volunteer groups and state associations.
The Lovington Chamber of Commerce approves a 1963 program led by Jim Jackson. Highlights include a January 31 banquet, a major membership drive to stabilize finances, building plans, agricultural promotions, and highway designation efforts for U S Highway 82 Extension. Legislative activity and industrial development also feature prominently.
