A humorous update to a dozen item ranching list mocks rising costs in Lea County. Items include hats boots cattle and credit from banks, feed stores, and in-laws, plus a second list of 1852 office rules noting godliness punctuality and labor-law humor.
Gov Bruce King urged New Mexico lawmakers at the start of the 1973 session in Santa Fe to approve a one-year personal income tax cut. He cited a projected $42 million surplus and proposed a $528.8 million budget. He favored a targeted tax cut over rebates and stressed expanding state development, law enforcement, and education amid a 60 day session with Democrats in control.
Justice McManus addressed the 1973 New Mexico Legislature urging overhaul of judicial procedures to handle a growing workload and complex litigation. He pushed repealing archaic evidentiary rules, expanding the administrative office of the courts, regional deputy administrators, and implementing a computer system to improve planning and program development. He noted magistrate, district, appeals, and Supreme Court reforms, including faster memoranda, pre appeal hearings, and improved appellate indexing.
In St Andrews Scotland a women s liberation group harassed men with wolf whistles and ogres. They reported quick results and one middle aged man attempted to attack a member but the group said they subdued him and settled the matter.

Variable high cloudiness tonight and Wednesday with little temperature change. Readings include Clovis 35 to 62, Lovington 38 to 72, Artesia 37 to 68, Santa Fe 26 to 47, Las Cruces 30 to 62, and Central Mountains to Southwest Valleys with similar trends.
A motion to dismiss the murder charge against Wanda Hartis remains pending in district court after a hearing was postponed due to the judge's illness. Hartis, 42, is charged with killing her husband Chester in July 1972, with trial set for Friday February 9 and no date yet for the dismissal hearing. Her lawyers are Gene Samberson and Mack Easley.
Funeral services are planned for Jack Leroy Pool at 2 P.M. Wednesday at Smith-Rogers Chapel. Pool, employed by American Grain Co, died in an accident at a grain elevator in Plainview last Thursday after failing to check out. The body was recovered after workers used a winch line and cutting torches. Rev. M L Barry will officiate, and interment will be in Lovington Cemetery. He is survived by an aunt in Lovington and other relatives in Bronte.
UPI reports U.S. air forces unleashed heavy strikes against Communist positions below the Demilitarized Zone in Vietnam. The operation targeted infiltration routes and supply lines as part of ongoing conflict maneuvers.
The Department of Finance and Administration reports six month general fund income at 139.9 million dollars, up nearly 11 percent from last year. December revenue totaled 24.8 million, up 2.5 million from December prior.
The Eastern New Mexico and West Texas Singing Convention will meet at the Tatum Community Center Saturday evening January 20 at 7 p.m. for its regular monthly singing. Sunday January 21 begins at 9 30 a.m. and lasts until 4 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend and bring a basket lunch.
Lea County commissioners unveiled a policy granting full discretion to elected officials on hiring within budgets. Bob Bensing stressed budget adherence while Louis Bryan of Hobbs was named airports manager and security officer under FAA rules. Repairs and renewals were approved for Lovington and Hobbs airports, including office remodeling and a two year State Police lease at $200 monthly.
Four men were held on federal charges after a light airplane drop of about 700 pounds of marijuana 17 miles southeast of Carlsbad. Bower and Powell, both 27 and 28, of Lake Tahoe California, were arraigned with $100000 bonds. Two others, Taylor and Stone, were arrested at the Taos airport charged with conspiracy and possession with intent to sell.
Freshmen lawmakers at Santa Fe spent two hours learning the New Mexico Legislature rules and procedures. Senate leaders Smalley and Apodaca urged civility and pragmatism, while Conway outlined minority roles and cross party cooperation.
Lovington Assembly of God Church schedules special services Wednesday through Sunday with Evangelist Eugene McClain speaking nightly at 7 p.m. McClain recently resigned as pastor of a large Albuquerque Charismatic Church to pursue full time evangelism. The event is at Fourth Street and Avenue C.
