Limbs Amputated When Cable Breaks On Carrier Constellation
A steel cable snapped during a landing attempt on the aircraft carrier Constellation whiplashed across the flight deck injuring eight to twelve crew. Four casualties were flown to North Island Navy Hospital. one radio report spoke of a fatality. Cmdr H S Matthews, commander of Fighter Squadron 143, piloted the Phantom jet back to Miramar. The ship has a history of serious accidents including a 1960 fatal fire during construction and a 1961 at sea fire in the No 1 machinery room.
