Weather and road conditions reduced cattle turnout with 265 head at the sale. Demand remained strong and all classes held steady with some figures up to 1.00 higher. notable consignments included E. S. Johnston Artesia and B. A. Pope Lovington among others. Next week’s consignments list 22 head charolais and 147 head cows and heifers with breds to bulls.
New Mexico state representative Hoyt Pattison urged using surplus funds to replace unsafe bridges on state highways after a deadly narrow-bridge crash near Fort Sumner. Clovis officials pressed for urgent action with the Highway Commission and Gov. King.
Dan Sullins Jr., 23, of 614 W Avenue H, Lovington, was listed in good condition at Lovington Lea General Hospital. He collapsed yesterday at Sharp No 32 rig about seven miles west and seven miles south of Lovington, near Buckeye, and was transported by city ambulance for observation.
Maurice W. Carroll has been elected vice president of manufacturing by the Famariss Oil and Refining Company board effective January 1. He began as an operator at the Monument refinery and rose through the ranks to oversee a plant that grew from 450 to about 5000 barrels per day and now aids in planning a new refinery at Lovington with Walter Famariss Jr. Carroll and his wife Virginia live at 226 West Silver, Hobbs.
New Mexico lawmakers polled by UPI say the 1973 session should include an automobile emission control plan and preservation of wilderness areas. They favor land subdivision regulation, with proposals ranging from crown taxes for cleanup to packaging waste recycling and predator protection for game.
Paul Coffer arranged four female European swans for Lovington's Chaparral Lake after learning from Michigan wildlife officials that the birds can be placed on request. City Manager Joe Smith coordinated with Edward Mikula in Lansing to arrange March 1 air shipment, with Lovington covering freight and city care once delivered.
The Delta Kappa chapter of Epsilon Sigma Alpha postpones a chili supper due to weather. Mrs. Mel Varnell, chairwoman, says tickets may be used at the rescheduled event or a refund will be issued.

Lovington school system reports boiler issues across all buildings to board member Jimmy Henry and Superintendent Larry Crouse. Exhibit A shows corroded pipes and mineral buildup. Taylor Junior High and Parkview Elementary are most affected, with all facilities needing major repairs and funding, prompting an authority to assess options.
Snow and freezing drizzle hit eastern New Mexico as the storm moved in from the west. Forecasters expected 1 to 3 inches of new snow in eastern areas while highways remained snow packed in many parts. An elderly Topeka couple died after skidding on snow on U S 54 east of Tucumcari and colliding with a semi trailer. Interstate 40 was closed briefly between Tucumcari and Santa Rosa and several eastside communities lost telephone service temporarily. The National Weather Service issued a travelers advisory for the eastern plains warning hazardous driving conditions.
A Rocky Mountain Farmers Union official announced in Clovis that New Mexico may form its own state charter by 1975. RMFU President John Stencil said a chartering board was appointed to pursue the goal, with NM, Colorado and Wyoming currently under one unit.
City commissioners vow to fight park vandalism at Avenue D rest stop after vandal damage including gravel in vents drains water on and wall defacement. Officials plan increased police surveillance and keep facilities open in winter while warning of severe penalties for further damage.
The General Telephone Company reports a minimal number of outages amid a severe ice storm. Rural Buckeye Artesia Plains areas hit hardest with 157 breaks and 70 spans lost. Crews from Memphis, Texas are aiding repairs. Plains lines undergrounded four years ago remain unaffected.
