Lovington residents can watch a live candidate forum tonight at 6:30 on Able Cable Channel 3. Sponsored by KLEA and Lovington Antenna Company, the program will be at the radio station studio with Hoyt Caldwell as moderator. Candidates A. L. Mahn Carl Henderson Elcolm Wright Fred Janca and Veech Payne will answer questions during about an hour. The city election is set for Monday January 14.
United Nations report says Katanga secessionist leader Moise Tshombe placed under UN house arrest in his Elisabethville presidential palace after UN security actions. Secretary General Thant announced the move Wednesday night at UN headquarters.
A United Nations command was issued demanding that Tshombe refrain from further irresponsible actions. The announcement stressed immediate restraint to prevent additional violations.
The United States and Soviet envoy agreed to a month-long postponement of the Geneva disarmament conference. The 17-nation session will resume February 12, after discussions between William C. Foster and Soviet Ambassador Anatoly Dobrynin.
Officials say the Geneva talks remain stalled as debates over verification and on site inspections continue. Charles Stelle may succeed Arthur Dean as lead U.S. negotiator while Russia hints at flexibility but insists on safeguards.
The 88th Congress backed an administration plan to permanently enlarge the House Rules Committee to 15 members by a 235 to 196 vote, giving Kennedy greater ability to push his legislative program. Republicans warned the move could pack the panel, while Democrats argued it would make the Rules Committee the servant of the House.
President Kennedy met with Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister Vasily Kuznetsov for about an hour in a cordial White House session. They reviewed the Cuba crisis, Berlin, armament, and other disputed items needing resolution as talks continue, with no final agreements reached.
Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. today for infant Jerri Lynn Ruth daughter of Mr and Mrs Jerry Ruth of Lovington. The burial will follow at Lovington Cemetery with Smith Yarbro Funeral Home in charge. The infant was born October 18 1962 at Lovington Lea General Hospital and died there early Wednesday. Survivors include her parents and grandparents Ernest Ruth McDonald John Byrd and John Roberts. Mountbatten arrives in Mexico February 26 for a five day visit as commander in chief of British naval forces.
VFEW plans a covered dish supper for members and families at the American Legion Hall on South Love Street tonight at T o'clock. Those interested in joining the VFW are invited to attend with a covered dish.
The 12 standing committees of the New Mexico House of Representatives announced their chairmen vice chairmen and members. Names include Mershon Parker Foster Boucher McCoy for key panels with coverage of Appropriations Agriculture Education Judiciary Labor and others, reflecting party balance and district representation.
A pair of gin fires within an hour kept Lovington volunteer firefighters on alert. A stove fire at Hilburn City Gin north of town sparked lint and burr-pile flames, burning two hours in gusty 30 mph winds. A second blaze at Paymaster Gin in east Lovington started by lint on a burr pit was promptly extinguished with no damage. Windy conditions threatened greater damage.
Two incumbents, Mrs. Taylor and Hobby Gann, seek re election to Lovington School Board. Election set for Tuesday February 1963 with two seats to be filled for year terms beginning March 1963. Gann seeks a full term. Taylor, appointed to fill a vacancy, seeks a regular term.
