Marie McDonald says her abduction appears planned in advance by two young men who entered her home. Police in Los Angeles and Hollywood plan further questioning over a diamond ring and other valuables taken, amid disbelief some call the event a hoax.
Two youth injuries reported from Saturday motor vehicle incidents within the city limits. Lee Hair, 14, was struck by a car at First Street and Southe Gen Beston, taken to Sea General for evaluation after a head bump. Terry Lumley, 5, riding a tricycle, bumped fore head when his path intersected a vehicle driven by Mrs. C G Bodgett. no charges filed.
District Judge John R. Brand, in a new black justice robe, drew names from the jury wheel for the next regular venire and emergency panels to report January 16. Regular venire and emergency panel lists include numerous names from Tatum Buckeye Eunice Lovington Jal and Hobbs with multiple residents noted. Criminal cases set from January 16 through the 22nd.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. for Lewis McDowell of 601 E Byars who died January 4 at a Big Spring veterans hospital. N L Williams of St John’s Baptist Church officiated at the rites, assisted by Walter Green. Griffin Funeral Home directed local arrangements.
In Hartford police chase a thief with a black eye ends with four suspects rounded up. All four turn out to be innocent as the search continues for the real culprit.
Lovington National Bank plans its annual meeting at 3 p.m. with election of officers. Ronald W. Walden, formerly a bank examiner, joins the bank from Lubbock to become cashier. Walden, a McKinney, Texas native with extensive banking study, will bring his wife and two young daughters to Lovington. his arrival follows approval by the board and confirmation of his appointment.
The next examination for real estate broker applicants will be held in Santa Fe on Monday February 25. February 25 is the last day to file applications with the New Mexico Real Estate Board. The board’s office is in the Simms Building in Albuquerque.
A 35 year old woman released from Lea County jail is described as possibly the world’s most arrested person, with 147 known arrests since 1948. Most offenses resulted in fines and 30 day hospital VD treatment, often under varying aliases. Her true identity remains only in fingerprint records.
John N. Elwood Smith died after a fight outside the 200 Club. Tom H. Morrison of Lovington Trailer Court, 27, is held on manslaughter charges. Beene released as material witness. Witnesses describe a fatal brawl with Morrison assaulting Smith after an earlier exchange and a bar altercation nearby. Autopsy confirms coroners verdict.
R U Boyd and Sons of Carlsbad are among 29 breeders consigning range bulls to the First Annual International Range Bull Sale in El Paso on February 1. Boyd lists 10 bulls in one pen and two aids in another pen, plus a five-bull lot, helping total offerings reach about 309. New Mexico leads consignments with 14 breeders from five states, all herds noted for merit-bloodlines, in conjunction with the Southwestern Livestock Show and Championship Rodeo now in its 28th year.
J S Davis appointed general sales manager for Southern Union Gas in Dallas. In the newly created role he will oversee the expanding sales program across ten districts in a 63 town Texas New Mexico Arizona Colorado area and coordinate a cooperative effort with appliance dealers architects and builders. Davis brings over 20 years in sales and management and has served as regional sales manager for Amana Inc. He is active in Park Cities Dad's Club University Park Methodist Church Boy Scout troop and Quarterback Club. He and wife live in Dallas with three children.
The county commission was sworn in Monday at 9 by District Court Clerk Wm. Beauchamp. J. R. Wycoff was elected chair pro tem. H Warren, manager of The Steak House and Lounge at Lea Co. Airport, was relieved of duties with Warren’s consent amid poor profits. An El Paso man may assume the spot after a suitable contract is drawn. Hines Flying Service asked to cancel hangar leases. the board voided current terms and seeks new lessees. Courthouse custodian Jess Benson to present a complete list of salvaged doors, windows and surplus items for sale by bids. Bids for courthouse addition bonds opened. award goes to Quinn and Associates of Albuquerque.
In Santa Fe forty of forty three House Democrats caucused to elect Lea County's Donald Hallam as Speaker for the current session. Matias Chacon Rio Arriba County named Majority Leader with William Grijava Jr. as floor whip and Floyd Cross as Chief Clerk. Thomas G Morris Quay County became caucus chair as Republicans hold twenty three seats to Democrats' forty three.
Cities Service Oil Company reorganizes its West Texas area into two districts North Odessa and South Odessa with A P Coe named district superintendent and E L Carlile as South Odessa superintendent. D D Bodie, Hobbs, oversees the West Texas New Mexico production program.
Hobbs residents Delbert Spnks and Gerald Gibson have enlisted in the United States Navy. Both men are from Hobbs and begin basic training shortly.
Jimmy Rice was taken from Sea General to Methodist Hospital in Lubbock after a fever spiked to 103 and pneumonia settled in his lungs. Doctors planned X-rays to assess need for possible surgery and warned lung tissue damage could require removal if he does not improve quickly.
William E. Graham, 58, of 115 3 Cochran Hobbs, died Saturday night in a Hobbs hospital after 15 years in the area as an oilfield construction worker. Funeral services were Monday at 2 p.m. at the Taylor Street Church of Christ with Lee McClesky officiating. Burial followed at Prairie Haven Cemetery. Griffin Funeral Home handled arrangements. He is survived by his widow Myrtis, daughters Mrs. Mack Bradley of Lubrock Texas and Mrs. Ed Tomerlin of Mineral Wells Texas, one sister Mrs. Sir Peters of Rogers Texas, and six grandchildren. Pallbearers were P. A. North, B. A. Brouse, D. A. Cochran, M. M. Maxwell, Hugh Smith, and Mr. Browning.
Final rites were held in Green Tree New Mexico for Herbert Henry Neel 56 of Bronco New Mexico. Minister Cecil Smith of Greentree Fall Gospel Church officiated with burial at Stetson Cemetery. He died Friday evening after illness following dinner and was pronounced dead on arrival at a Denver City Texas hospital. Survived by wife Bessie Neel of Bronco four daughters and four sons, plus two sisters and three brothers.
Mrs F E King mother of Mrs D C Sears of Hobbs died at 77 after a sudden illness in Jal. The family once lived in Jal, moved to Carlsbad for about three years, then returned to Jal in 1955. The CBS Fellowship service was set for Saturday Jan 2 at 2 p m in Jal.
Richard Klepper and Jerold Salter lead a drive to reorganize Jal Civil Defense Observation post known as Skywatch. A representative from Bliss Army HQ in El Paso Texas will visit Jal to finalize setup and declare the base ready for service.
