A Lovington public program on Able Cable 6 at 6:30 features interviews with city commission candidates Charles Skalenda John W Shearman and Rayburn Houchin Harold Denton is unopposed for the other seat. Officials will discuss the $1 3 million water bond and answer questions.
A Los Angeles jury clerk reports a sheriff guessed to be Peter J. Pitchess was excused from jury duty. In Denver a theater curbs Goldfinger nudity with cautious staging and a gold painted statue outside. A National Coal Board booklet says miners waste 52 minutes in a seven hour shift. Britain's mastiff Hector Warren lands a role in a TV series. In Italy a game misreads a bet as a lion, linking to a small pickup truck name.
Four Pine Valley youths Clifford Greenland Blaine Schroeder Kenneth Haught and John Watkins died from carbon monoxide asphyxiation after being left alone in a jail cell for about 11 hours following petty theft arrests. An old faulty heater was blamed as the likely cause and town residents demanded answers as officials ordered autopsy findings.
Viet Cong forces reportedly launched a significant attack in the Binh Gia area south of Saigon with up to 2000 guerrillas involved. Reported heavy jungle fighting 35 miles southeast of Saigon near Binh Gia while U S planners ordered Viet Nam bombers and fighters to strike.
Four area men had their driving privileges withdrawn or suspended by the New Mexico Motor Vehicle Department. Fred Daniel Parker of Lovington and Billy Joe Huffman of Tatum lost licenses for DUI convictions. Charley Wells Hankins of Lovington and Joe Lindly Osborn of Tatum had suspensions for an interview failure or reexamination issues.
A group of New York detectives, including an assistant district attorney, arrived in Miami to recover jewels stolen from the American Museum of Natural History. They were seen with suspect Allen Kuhn, but officials offered no confirmation of recovery as pursuit continued.
Lovington police search for suspects after vandals knocked four meters from poles on the Lea County Courthouse square. Three meters were found in an incinerator on North East Street. one pole remains missing. Meters were five and ten cent types installed in August 1963 costing $58 each. Police report few leads and fingerprints were smudged.
The Planned Parenthood Federation urged President Johnson to order a five year 109 million crash program of fertility research to develop birth control methods acceptable to all faiths. They cited the State of the Union pledge to seek new ways to ease the world population explosion and resource scarcity and praised the President for publicly acknowledging the issue.
In Nashville NAACP leaders protested Gov George Wallace scheduled to speak at the Tennessee School Board Association convention. Wallace faced threats from protesters despite police protection as Mississippi Gov Paul Johnson discussed possible federal desegregation mandates. Georgia Education Board to hold first of three meetings Friday.
Occasional rain today in Santa Fe and Las Vegas shifting to snow tonight with cooler conditions Friday. Highs 28 to 38 in Santa Fe and 30 to 42 in Las Vegas. Clouds rise in Carlsbad Lovington Tucumcari Clovis with chances of light rain and cooler air. temperatures 40s to mid 50s. Officials meet superintendents to discuss civil rights law. In Atlanta a new criminal court solicitor prosecutes a case charging Lester Maddox with threatening Negroes with a pistol.
A burglar broke into Glen's Bar, 14 miles east of Lovington, overnight and stole several bottles of liquor and some cash from the register. Dotty Youngblood, a bar employee, found the break in at 8 a.m. The sheriff notes the last employee left at 2 a.m. and no liquor value is yet determined.
The report shows a daytime high of 72 degrees and a nighttime low of 4 degrees at two o clock. The data reflects a cold afternoon with a sharp drop after peak temperatures.
Frankie Monthieth owner of a ranch 12 miles north of Tatum reported an employee Johnny Gomez Garcia 21 of 118 W Jackson Lovington took dishes silverware and other household goods. Garcia was arrested at his Lovington home and slated to appear before Justice Drayston Wasson.
Nudist promoter John Dawson says a Miss Lady Godiva contest will be staged at his nudist camp in about two months with more than a dozen applicants including an Atlanta entrant who claims she has everything but the horse. First prize is a trip to Coventry England and a film role as Miss Godiva. Sissy Dawson has divorced and remarried after a Spring wedding to her first husband Charles D Narrow who accused cruelty.
Ed Roberts, Lovington water facilities chair, warns water shortages deter business and depress land values. He notes Bloomington Indiana saw land values rise from 40 to 4000 dollars per acre after a water program attracted growth, urging local action to avoid stagnation.
The last major storm moved eastward from the Pacific coast as rain showers and fair weather followed. The disaster left 41 dead and about 700 million dollars in damage across the Northwest and northern California. The Eel River crested above flood stage while Sierra blizzards closed Interstate 80 and halted two transcontinental trains. A San Francisco nurse, Annette R. Saltus, 43, was killed at a ski resort when she slipped under a snow removal tractor.
