Defense Secretary McNamara announced a 14.4 percent average pay increase at a $1.7 billion yearly cost to Congress, focusing top raises on first term service members and adjusting future pensions to cost of living. The proposal also adds promotions credits and remote duty compensation with annual reviews by the Assistant Defense Secretary.
Gene Jackson 41 and Weldon Higgs 36 were arrested after a Williamsburg post office robbery on New Year’s Eve. Police say they recovered an adding machine stamp dispenser notary seal and various envelopes. Postal inspectors planned to transport them to Albuquerque as charges unfold.

Agriculture Secretary Orville Freeman told President Kennedy the press coverage hinders selling gains of the 1963 farm program. He urged cooperation with Republicans to keep agriculture from becoming a bitter partisan issue while pressing for wheat referendum approval, fair market access, and new feed grain and dairy rules.
Sen. Clinton P. Anderson and Rep. Thomas G. Morris will fly to Oklahoma City to attend the funeral for Sen. Robert S. Kerr who died in Washington. They plan to return to New Mexico before Congress opens next Tuesday.
In a busy two day district court session Judge John R. Brand saw eleven defendants enter guilty pleas and receive varied sentences. Among those sentenced were Robert W. Sparks for three forgery counts and Lester Ale for one forgery count, with penalties ranging from one year to ten years including consecutive terms for Sparks.
Graveside rites for the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gonzalo Fernandez of Lovington were held at 9:30 Thursday at Lovington Cemetery. The newborn, first Lovington Lea General Hospital birth, died shortly after birth. Mrs. Fernandez was reported in fair condition at the hospital. Funeral services were under Scarbro Funeral Home.
