Lovington’s 1972 featured strong business development with six major construction projects and many remodels. The town anticipates two large ventures in 1973 Betty Ditto’s motel and Walter Famariss’ refinery, signaling continued growth and a new industrial focus for the local economy.
Eleven Texas youths hospitalized after a bus collision with a car on snow slick Interstate 10 east of Lordsburg were released to continue home from the Rose Bowl trip. Nineteen other passengers escaped. 26 were treated for minor injuries amid a $40,000 fund-raising effort by Angleton High School Band members and chaperones.
U S Rep Harold Runnels of New Mexico joined House Democrats Tuesday in backing a resolution to cut off all Vietnam War funds if President Nixon does not end the war soon. The secret ballot passed 154 to 75, opposing further military funding in Indochina with a condition to ensure safe troop withdrawal. Runnels said the measure has no binding effect on the administration but should press the President to heed Democratic concerns.
A United Press International poll shows a 20 of 35 New Mexico legislators favor revising property tax laws with varied ideas. Some seek local control by returning tax revenue, others call for shifting more to income tax or statelevel administration, and proposals include personal property tax repeal, codification, elderly relief, mineral tax tweaks, severance tax investment, and estate tax changes.
Santa Fe UPI House speaker Walter Martinez released committee appointments for the 1973 session. The list covers 11 standing committees with chairmen and vice chairmen, noting party affiliations for Democrats and Republicans.
Travelers advisory issued early this morning for the East Central and Southeastern Plains. Fog and snow packed highways reported early. UPI reported U S B52s dropped about 900 tons on approaches to two major Ho Chi Minh trail sections in North Vietnam and 1500 tons on targets in northern South Vietnam. Aircraft operated under poor weather as 84 fighters and 13 B52 flights faced monsoon rain.
The Lea County Quarter Horse Association meets Tuesday January 9 1973 at 7 00 p m in the new fair building to discuss yearly activities elect officers and plan monthly playdays open to all. The 1973 show is planned for June 23 24 at the Jake McClure arena with judge Bubba Cassio of El Paso. It will receive approvals from several AQHA associations.
Portales based corporation buys Lovington Office Supply and Printing from Jim McCrory effective January 1. New manager Ronnie Scribner relocated from Levelland with seven years in Script Office Supply. Plan includes doubled stock, new lines like Remington, and a service department.
Rep Hoyt Pattison urges farmers with three quarter ton pickups to apply for lower farm vehicle license rates. A 34 ton pickup is eligible for one third off normal fees under a last year’s law change. Renewal forms mailed by the Motor Vehicle Department reference old farm rates and omit the lower option. Pattison urged area farmers to visit the Lovington MVD office for help securing the reduced rate.
Rep. Hoyt Pattison urges tapping part of New Mexico's 40 million surplus to repair inadequate bridges on the state road system. He cites the Ft Sumner structure where 19 died, pressing for better markings and possible flashing lights, and says eight other bridges may be similarly deficient.
Santa Fe UPI The drivers of two vehicles in a 19 fatality day near Fort Sumner last week had been up long hours. Truck driver Erby Wilmeth of Clovis and bus driver Jerry Estes of San Antonio began driving early and the crash occurred about 6 40 p m. The state police report says there was no way to tell which vehicle was left of center on the narrow bridge 11 3 miles east of Fort Sumner. No enforcement action was taken. Estes had rested during a leg from Austin to Vadito but the report did not say if he slept or if the 630 departure was central or mountain time. The bus carried youths on a church sponsored ski trip to northern New Mexico. The report says Wilmeth saw the bus begin onto the bridge and pulled to the extreme right then struck the bridge and the bus struck Wilmeth behind the sleeper compartment. Both drivers were going the speed limit at the time. No alcohol was involved. (See CRASH Sec 1 Pg 3)
Friends report Mrs Harold Runnels recovering well after major surgery at Lea General Hospital Hobbs last week. She plans to recuperate in Lovington once released, as reported. she is the wife of Congressman Harold Runnels.
Virginia's Cupboard at 901 W Avenue D announces seven day operation starting Sunday January 7. Weekdays hours are 7 30 a m to 7 30 p m with Sunday hours 11 30 a m to 7 30 p m. Owner is Mrs Verne Stubbs.
Weather and muddy roads hampered attendance as 646 head sold this week. Bulk of receipts was good with strong demand for feeder stock, good age stockers and young calves. older cows and pairs steady to down slightly. Several ranchers and buyers listed with prices and consignments for next sale in Midland Texas on January 4.
