Bruce King became New Mexico's 23rd governor in a noon inauguration at the state capitol. He pledged a serious administration focused on welfare and necessities, vowing to protect every resident and to fuse natural and human resources for a better state.
Outgoing New Mexico Governor David Cargo said he leaves office with a deep feeling of goodwill toward his successor Bruce King. He spoke during King’s oath of office ceremony in the Capitol rotunda and avoided recounting his administration’s accomplishments.

U S forces report a sharp rise in battle casualties blamed on Viet Cong violations of a New Year cease-fire. A five-man Navy supply boat crew was killed in the Mekong Delta, with six Americans dead and 43 wounded overall since the cease-fire began. Additional American and South Vietnamese deaths, plus enemy losses, are noted across Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos, including the downing of a U S Air Force captain over the Plain of Jars.
In Eunice New Mexico officials report mercury thefts from meters used to measure pipeline pressure. With 3000 meters in Lea County alone losses mount as authorities note conversion costs about 235 dollars per meter while mercury sells for 12 dollars per pound on open market and 2 to 4 dollars on the black market.
