New Mexico marks New Year’s Eve with parties and closures as state police prepare to curb drinking driving. Roadblocks planned in some areas to intercept intoxicated motorists and reduce highway fatalities, which stand at 426 this morning. State Police Chief Joe Roach warns that “one for the road” tonight should be coffee.
President Eisenhower endorses a $1.8 billion four year program to fund federal scholarships in science and math, guidance and aptitude testing at junior high, and graduate fellowships. The plan, approved with Health Secretary Folson at Gettysburg, will be sent to Congress after next month’s reconvening.
An 11 year old Colorado Springs boy was fatally injured Monday after pulling the pin on a toy grenade he found in a closet. His brothers warned him, but he collapsed and died 45 minutes later during surgery. Police launched an Fort Carson investigation into who left the grenade.
The Hobbs Jaycees and New Mexico Jaycees with Famariss Oil & Refining Co sponsor the fourth annual state OYF program. Lea County winner advances to national judging as dozens of applicants are considered. Nomination deadline is January 15, 1958.
The State Supreme Court upheld a 30 day jail sentence imposed last year on a Calvis woman convicted of delivering alcohol to a minor. The ruling confirms the appellate outcome and preserves the sentence.
United Press reports oil men expect about a 3 percent demand rise in 1958 led by gasoline and home heating oil. Factors behind 1957 gains included warm weather, high inventories, and imports, with 1958 forecasts noting reduced imports and production cuts.
Wayne Carpenter, 22, was captured in Palm Beach, a day after his alleged accomplice Kienny Overton died in a Georgia crash while fleeing police. The men were sought for a Washington nightclub owner and singer slaying. Carpenter admitted his identity and said he discarded the murder weapon. The pair allegedly drove from Washington to Miami before separating.
A special meeting for De Molays is scheduled for Monday January 30. Initiation of members will be held during the session.

He plans New Year’s Day mass for American GIs, visits 300 sailors aboard the destroyer Thomas, blesses a $100,000 Formosan Catholic Church, meets Chiang Kai-Shek, and hosts mass and meetings with U.S. and local Catholic servicemen before departing to the Philippines.
Washington dispatch notes limited chances for major civil rights bills as Congress reopens. Senate Democrats forecast no new rights measures will pass this year, while the Eisenhower administration plans no new proposals. Mansfield suggests a cooling off period to allow current legislation to take root before action.
The New Mexico Council for the Advancement of Education says it is not an opposition group to the New Mexico Education Association. A spokesman calls impressions to the contrary incorrect and unfortunate, stressing cooperation with those seeking to improve the educational system.

Zapata Petroleum No 1 Danglade wildcat eight miles south of Tatum recovered substantial salt water from a deep test. Dan Angle completes No 123 Angle Welch Federal a one mile southwest extension to Lusk field with 50 barrels per day potential, perforations 2417-2431 feet. Location Mallamar area, Section 23-19S-31E.
The President will launch the GOP congressional election campaign with a speech in Chicago on January 20. The Chicago address will be part of a series of nationwide fundraising dinners at which top administration leaders will speak.
Governor Mechem remains silent on whether he will seek a fourth term. He confirmed he will not run for Senate and plans to announce after March 4 filing day.

Lovington celebrates the first baby of 1958 with gifts from many local merchants. B and B Jewelry offers a ring, B and J Drug a $5 gift certificate, Western Auto a baby gift, and Lovington Photo a portrait. Numerous shops provide blankets, baby food, toys, certificates, and services toward the newborn’s family.
City Commission held a very quiet Monday session with two ordinances approved. A purchase of two actuating street lights at 2200 to be installed at 7th and Avenue D and Main and Jefferson was authorized with green lighting normally and red on side-street approach. Land sale proposal from builder Art Bintz for a water well in his addition north of Lovington was not acted on.
Dr. Hilton W. Gillett was taken to Lubbock Memorial Hospital on Sunday in an ambulance. Mrs. Gillett remained by his bedside.
A 17 year old Santa Fe boy named George Reel was shot and killed while target practicing north of Moriarty. He twirled a .22 pistol on his finger and the gun fired striking him below the heart. he died en route to a hospital. Peace Justice Eugene Hanks ruled the death an accidental personal safety related gunshot wound.
Barry Betogen of Mission South Dakota won the Burlington Liar's Club award for 1957 with a tale of a farmer in a farm field so long he traded for a combine on the way back. Honorable mentions went to Hickory Bil Simmons and Ray Burmeister for other tall tales.
