Feathers fly as sheriff and deputies shoot at starlings and sparrows roosting on courthouse square each evening. Birds Tank the roost while officers claim progress before darkness ends the firefight. Casualties tallied as the stand off continues with uncertain results.
Extensive damage reported at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Don Land at 1313 South Sixth and the Yucca Drive In after BB gun vandalism. Deputies found the cinema closed for winter with windows boarded, doors kicked, a popcorn machine damaged, syrup spilled, glass shattered, and lights shot out. Estimated losses about 250 dollars with suspects not yet identified.
City court records show a small holiday docket extending back to December 21 with twelve cases before Judge John W. Green. Notable actions include a $5 cost assessment on a dismissed assault complaint and fines for various traffic offenses. A jail sentence was handed to Jack Hampton for drunkenness.
L J Calley a longtime Jal rancher and civic leader dies at 54 from a gunshot wound found beside his body in a Carlsbad storage room. Funeral services pending as Tulsa daughter travels to attend. Survived by widow, daughter Iva Lee Holloway in Tulsa, two stepsons Buzz Easterling and Ross Easterling, Albuquerque, five brothers and three sisters. Calley helped form Jal fire department, bank and schools and funded water for the Dollarhide oil field. Born July 30, 1902 in Cherokee Texas.
Reports state Mr. Land planned a trip and worked near the 1956 Dodge in the attached garage when a can of gasoline was overturned. A flash fire engulfed the garage and caused extensive damage to the car and home, leaving the Dodge nearly total loss.
Tieron Pete Horton resigns as manager of Shain's Jewelry after six years. He will stay in Hobbs and pursue a new line of business after a rest. Bill Davis of Carlsbad assumes manager duties and will be assisted by Horton during year end closeout. Davis previously managed Gossett's Jewelry in Hobbs in 1948 and Carlsbad before returning to Hobbs with his family. His daughter Linda is five.
Grand Rapids report that Michigan Consolidated Gas Co. begins converting one of its own buildings from coal to gas heat as part of a broader shift to cleaner energy. The move highlights the utility’s operational changes in Michigan.

Pvt. Aron Lincoln, husband of Marian of Hobbs New Mexico, finishes eight weeks of basic combat training with the 4th Armored Division at Fort Hood Texas. He is in the first phase of a three part program to train 7500 replacements for the 3rd Armored Division in Germany. Lincoln is the son of West Lincoln Tomgree Odessa Texas and a graduate of Blackshear High School in Odessa.
Sinclair Oil and Gas Co No 1688 in Lea County reports a completion attempt at Queensland with casing set at 4,064 feet. Drillstem test from 3,930 to 4,030 feet showed 25 feet free oil and 830 feet heavily oil and gas cut mud. Further tests from 4,034 to 4,065 feet yielded 45 feet of very slightly oil and gas cut mud. Location 60 feet from north and east lines of Sec 25 20s 35e.
The United Nations faces potential further friction with Egyptian President Nasser over clearing the Suez Canal. Nasser allows the U.N. team led by General Raymond Wheeler to begin salvage work while reserving the right to interfere. He delayed operations six weeks and pressures loom from Britain, France, and Russia.
Final rites are pending for Bertha Mae Nix of Hobbs 618 South Third. She became ill while dining Friday night and died at Hobbs Hospital. A coroner's inquest led by Justice of Peace Louis Bryan found death due to natural causes. Nix was a Franklin's Hobbs maid. Jury members included Otho Bilbo Calvin Whitworth Lyle Garner R C Brown and Cal Cecil. The body rests at the funeral home.
A Portalesan becomes health education and recreation chief for the state department of education. Fred J. Hinger succeeds Dorothy Cline who returns to the University of New Mexico as professor of government. Hinger previously taught and supervised health education and recreation in Portales public schools.
Opie Thompson of Albuquerque will likely be moved to the state hospital at Las Vegas on Saturday after District Judge Robert Reidy ordered commitment. Three psychiatrists testified following an insanity affidavit from Thompson’s wife regarding the November 10 bar slaying of 51 year old Arthur Carson in Albuquerque.
Five hooded men tied a Camden South Carolina man to a tree and flogged him after accusing him of supporting integration. Hospital officials described his condition as not serious but with severe bruising. He said he was fixing a flat when seized, driven 15 miles, tied to a tree, and beaten with boards and switches before being released. He denied making pro integration speeches.
The New York Central Railroad will build electric push button freight yards at Youngstown Ohio and Elkhart Indiana costing 21 million dollars. Yards will use television and weather penetrating radio speed controls to cut mileage and freight handling time. An electronic yard is also contemplated at Buffalo.
Lovington approves the largest single building permit in city history for an auditorium and an elementary school costing 1.192 million. Earlier permits totalled 1.106 million for Yarbro high gym in 1955, with 1956 figures likely rising into 1957 as December activity surpasses 1954 yearly totals.
