A Mont Laurier area home housing 18 people caught fire early today. Nine children aged 3 to 18 died, while the parents and five others escaped by jumping from second floor windows into six inches of snow. Four siblings were hospitalized with injuries.

Washington AP draft chief Lewis B Hershey says 618 people in 46 states have turned in burned or discarded draft cards. About half were vulnerable to the draft, while others were in non immediate call classifications 4F or not subject to call. Fire of October Pentagon protest noted. burning a card is a federal offense with up to five years and a $10,000 fine.
District Director R C Haberstroh says more than 65 000 aliens will file addresses in January under the federal address report program. 68 039 aliens reported in January 1967. Non citizens excluding diplomatic staff and certain international representatives must file. Violations carry penalties. Address report cards available at INS offices and U S post offices from January 1 1968.
In Catron County ranchers fought heavy snows isolating herds. Paul Lund reported 11 cattle and one horse dead on the 90 square mile 7 Troughs Ranch near Quemado. Hay shipments and heavy equipment aided road clearance as relief and disaster status expanded.
Socorro County voter registration board member Richard H. Russell says the purge ended December 15 and followed state statutes. County Democratic chairman George Baca accuses Republicans of a political purge, while Russell notes errors possible and explains mailed notices and volunteer oversight.

New Mexico wide outlook includes variable clouds, light snow in northern mountains today and Saturday, southern mountains seeing light snow. winds stay strong and temperatures drop with night lows 20 to 35 and possible 10 to 20 in snow covered areas. Saturday highs 29 to 39 in the north and 35 to 56 in the south.
DETROIT AP The United Auto Workers announced a three-year national GM contract covering about 380 000 workers with strong approval from skilled and production ranks. Woodcock said 3 4 to 1 among skilled workers and 5 to 1 among production workers supported the pact, which requires ratification by both groups. He urged locals to begin plant level negotiations and warned that any strikes or curtailment must be preauthorized by union headquarters. The settlement mirrors Ford and Chrysler deals.
A joint Shell Oil Co and Halliburton Services effort in the Permian Basin used Mod Brine 500 to fracture Morrow sand in Lea and Eddy counties. Two wells, Fed G R 4-1 in Grama Ridge Lea and David Faskin Skelly Fed No 1 in Indian Basin Eddy, showed gas production more than doubling, with sustained gains six months after treatment.
Santa Fe AP Armijo was sworn in today as the first replacement on New Mexico's Appeals Court. More than 50 people attended including Armijo’s wife and family Gov Cargo Atty Gen Witt and members of the State Appeals Court and Supreme Court. He filled the vacancy caused by the resignation and death of E T Hensley Jr of Portales.
