Diane Smith a 22 year old Las Cruces woman charged with homicide in the death of N M State University student Ku an Shih was sent to the State Hospital at Las Vegas for a psychiatric examination. Arraignment was deferred and bond set after the exam. She was pale and dazed as she appeared in court.
Mr and Mrs Jack Swinton and two children mourn the death of their husband and father who died December 27 after a heart attack. Services were held for the local man’s father with nearby relatives in attendance.
In Memphis, Kim Caylor of Hobbs New Mexico was selected first alternate to the 1967 Maid of Cotton. Georgia Kay Pearce of North Carolina won and will tour the United States, Canada, Ireland and the Caribbean as the industry’s fashion ambassador. Connie Diane Fletcher of Phoenix earned second alternate as 20 beauties from cotton states competed. Pearce, a 21 year old UNC senior, was runner up to Miss Pearce’s successor and Peach Georgia paraded at the Memphis Auditorium.
Clovis state House majority leader David Norvell pulled his offer of a free flight and Dallas NFL championship game tickets to legislators citing adverse publicity. He noted invitations were voluntary and many lawmakers already accepted or declined. The game pits the Dallas Cowboys against the Green Bay Packers on New Year’s Day. costs for flight and tickets would have totaled about six thousand dollars.
Harold Haddock and John Bishop built a versatile hunting car in Southeastern New Mexico from a 1942 Ford. They upgraded with larger tires and extra cooling to handle rough terrain and ensure safer, more comfortable travel through Lea County and surrounding counties.
The altered auto uses interior fenders and hood plus a rear seat heater. Transmission and driveline from larger trucks, engine a flathead V-8 339 cubic inches from 1949 to 1963. Haddock notes it never balked and ran through the area with top speed 75 mph, empty weight 5,250 pounds.
