President Ford said he would study an across the board amnesty for Vietnam era draft evaders and deserters at the request of Mrs. Helen Hart after her husband Senator Hart died. He indicated no commitment and noted his 1974 75 plan had produced about 18 000 who earned good standing while most did not act. The decision is expected before January 20.
The EEOC district director in Albuquerque upheld the city administration in denying swamper Kenneth Thomas time off to attend a church convention. Thomas claimed religious discrimination, but EEOC Director Tom E Robles ruled charges lacked proof of violation and noted the denial was due to short notice and staffing. Ellison has left the city.
In Dallas a Arab League observer Amin Hilmy I defended rising Arab oil prices saying the cycle harms both sides. He warned U.S. buyers face higher costs to produce goods and called for closer ties and mutual trade to create jobs, while noting the boycott over Israel is a separate issue. Hilmy projected imports from the U.S. could reach 11 billion by 1980, supporting 90 000 jobs.
President elect Jimmy Carter discussed economic plans with his Cabinet on Saint Simons Island Georgia noting a tax cut as a likely prospect. He announced Walter Mondale will be his chief of staff and said the Mondale relationship could be unprecedented between a president and vice president. Carter said the package to be revealed by end of next week will focus on work opportunity to cut unemployment.
President Carter spoke with New York Governor Carey and NYC Mayor Beame about the city’s economic woes. He described a forthcoming package in outline form with a government stimulus range and said actions would scale with the economic picture.
President Ford rides a chairlift with a Secret Service agent when a loose wire in a derail switch causes a safety device to shut down power. Lift resumes after 90 minutes of repair. Ford was never in danger.
Patsy Tramell sues ranch owner Barry Caswell in Lovington District Court seeking 300000 dollars for injuries from a collision with a barbed wire fence on a road used by the public. She claims no warning was given and negligence caused her harm. Jerry Lewis of Neal and Neal represents the plaintiff.
Eight Lovington residents are among NMSU degree candidates for the 84th commencement at Las Cruces, with 700 graduates recognized May 14. Names include G. R. McNeil, Lynne L. Yarbro, Van Nobel Ward, Joel G. Davis, Joseph D. Madary, Larry A. Neel, Barbara J. Gleason, and Joel D. Williams.
The Dow Jones average hovered around 1990 early Tuesday on the New York Stock Exchange, at 998.17 or up 2.08, after briefly crossing 1,006 in early trading. Volume neared 11.3 million shares as gains slowed and investors took profits at the 1,000 mark. Analysts cite tax selling winding down and expectations of a Carter stimulus plan as factors shaping the market.
Lovington resident J E Meil, injured in a summer plane crash near the state line, was rehospitalized for emotional remission. Wife Sondra provided the update and asked readers to mail notes to Room 462 E, Methodist Hospital, Lubbock.
The United States posts a record 906 million trade deficit for November due to higher petroleum imports and lower farm export values. Imports reach 10.5 billion, up from October, while exports total 9.6 billion, down about one percent.
UPI reports Joseph Lewis, a Texas native and Army lieutenant, catalogs about 1500 date nails used by railroads from 1899 to 1969 to show preservation results. He notes collectors now span all 50 states and that larger collections can reach 12000 nails plus numerous photos.
In New Mexico from Oct 25 to Dec 3, 320 school buses were inspected. 85 were unsafe and 83 satisfactory, with 152 listed as unsatisfactory. Unannounced checks covered district and contractor buses. defects included steering, brakes, tires, lights, exhaust, seats, and windshields necessitating reinspections before returning to service.

Jesse Melson 26 chased Florentino Garcia after a collision that damaged several vehicles. He clung to the roof for 13 blocks at speeds up to 50 mph, banging the windshield and alerting police who arrested Garcia on hit and run, careless driving, no license and DUI charges.
