A bomb was found at a Times Square movie theater prompting a police and bomb squad response. Investigators secured the area and evacuated patrons as authorities assessed the device and searched for suspects or motives.
Occupation licenses for Lovington businesses must be purchased before any day of operation and are due by January 1, as announced by City Clerk Osborne Fisher. Dog licenses also expire December 31 and can be renewed at City Clerk's office.
Deputies search for a man accused of deserting his wife and three young children in Worominge. The 18 year old wife and children aged 18 months, 8 months, and Christmas Eve baby faced hardship after the husband left only a dollar for Christmas. Sheriff McAdoo and donors from the Lions Club and local oil fund provided aid, with the wife seeking work as a waitress and described as a spunky, young mother.
Albuquerque native Joseph C. Ryan aged 36 is named assistant U.S. Attorney to begin February 4, announced by U. S. Attorney Paul Larrazolo. He replaces Melvin Robins who resigned to enter private practice. Ryan is an authority on libel and slander laws and recently worked on a study for the New Mexico Press Association.
A Colorado federal grand jury indicted Henry Kahrs and his son Walter of a Otis farm on failing to report or pay taxes on $191,000 for 1953 1954. They were arrested at the Otis farm and released on $1,000 bonds each after previous similar arrest and a 1952 charge, later quashed due to statute of limitations.
Farm committees from Valencia and Bernalillo Counties approve first season experiments at the Middle Rio Grande Experimental Farm near Los Lunas. Vegetables include onions lettuce carrots potatoes chili cabbage tomatoes and cantaloupes. Operations move to Los Lunas from the Albuquerque area on January 1.

Board Chairman Eugene Holman said the world stands on the threshold of an era of oil energy expected to extend for years. The total budget marks a 29 percent rise over 1956.

Nationally, NFIP advances to chapters total $6.7 million. the 1956 emergency fund allotment of $5.3 million is exhausted.
