African Pilot sails from Havana with 1000 Cuban relatives

The freighter African Pilot departed Havana for Port Everglades at 6 45 p m carrying about 1000 Cuban relatives or ransom prisoners to join loved ones in the United States. Women and children were boarded first amid heat and emotional stress as guards checked luggage and a few items were discarded. The ship’s master Alfred Boerum refused to exceed the 1000 passenger limit. Red Cross teams provided medical care cots and meals for the crossing while relatives gathered at a Miami area home to file departure applications.

Lovington police and Lea County Sheriff report a quiet Christmas with one arrest for drunkenness and burglary on Christmas Day. A Lovington woman was hospitalized after an attempted overdose. Christmas Eve saw four arrests including two for drunkenness and fighting, plus charges of driving with a revoked license and hit and run.

Kennedy to meet six Cuban prisoners group leaders in Palm Beach

President Kennedy agreed to meet Thursday night with six leaders of the Cuban prisoner group recently returned from imprisonment after the Bay of Pigs. The talks were arranged in Miami by White House Press Secretary Pierre Salinger and the group leaders at Kennedy's oceanfront holiday headquarters.

Woman in Critical Condition After Christmas Pill Overdose

A 26 year old Lovington woman remained in critical condition at Lovington Lea General Hospital after reportedly taking a dose of sleeping pills. Police said she collapsed at home Tuesday while talking with a neighbor who found her and called for help. She was admitted Christmas day and remained unconscious Wednesday.

Soviets Test Nuclear Devices Over Christmas Holiday

The Atomic Energy Commission says the Soviet Union conducted multiple nuclear detonations during December 23 to 24, with yields from low to several megatons, the largest amounting to 2.5 megatons. Izvestia hinted a halt if the U.S., Britain, and France also pause.

East German family escapes by armored bus to West Berlin

A bus carrying eight East Germans including two couples and four children broke through three border barriers near Babelsberg using homemade armored plates and a snowplow. Bullets shattered the windshield but no serious injuries occurred as they reached the Marienfelde refugee camp for Christmas.
