In Vientiane two rival Lao leaders Souvanna Phouma and Souphanouvong hold talks with pro Western premier Boun Oum to form a coalition. A three day deadline looms as plans fracture over cabinet distribution while Pathet Lao troops distribute leaflets urging army revolt. Rebel guards accompany the talks amid tense security.

East German authorities sentenced three men for aiding refugees escape to West Berlin. Klaus Dieter Minx 21 received four years, Andreas Stalder 23 got three and a half years, and Wolfram Wurde 20 was jailed two years and nine months. All were arrested before Christmas and confessed. A Swiss bank employee was mentioned in connection with the case. A British spokesman said Bernard Collett 21 was released after being held for attempting to smuggle an East Berlin woman across the border.
A coroner's inquest was scheduled for today into the death of Morris Paul Jones 31 found in an Gallup arroyo. Authorities saw no foul play. Jones son of Navajo Nation Council Chairman Paul Jones survived by wife and two children. He served in the Korean War and worked in a warehouse. Funeral services were planned for today. Sheriff Mollica ordered the inquest after initial discussions.
The Defence Ministry announced Centaur and Plymouth sailed from Mombasa after warnings of increased tensions in the Middle East. Informants linked the moves to troop movements near Kuwait. Five British warships remain in port. Centaur carries 45 aircraft at 28 knots. Plymouth is an anti submarine frigate.

Al Jennings 98, former head of the Jennings gang and Wild West figure, died of natural causes in Tarzana California. He survived by wife Maude and later by the wife of a nephew who cared for him. Roosevelt once spared him from prison. he later became an actor writer and evangelist.
Denver detective said Alfred W. Ratzioff again denied any connection to the Carlsbad New Mexico and Hondo slayings of teenage girls. Investigators had earlier said he confessed to the November 8 kidnapping of Sandra Lee Smith 16 of Aurora. She was beaten shot and left in a Colorado cornfield and she remains in hospital for treatment.
