The Graham family enjoys a lively holiday with children home for Christmas. Lovington crowds flood downtown as shoppers fill the streets. a major truck terminal project and energy bill discussion loom over the town’s mood and economy.
Public Service Commission member Clarence Lithgow said the panel denied Southern Union Gas Co. a hearing on a proposed rate rise filed on short notice. The utility sought an immediate hearing and a quick decision to fund 60 billion cubic feet of gas from Tenneco, with costs to be passed to consumers.

Police report morning heist at Circle K on Avenue D where manager Johnny Blane was tied up and robbed of about $3000 after two men entered with guns. Blane freed himself and dialed police using a pencil eraser in his mouth. Det Lt. Ed Thomas investigated after a second break in at General Surveying Company.
United Press International reports generally fair weather on the Eastern Plains through Saturday with high clouds. Occasional moderate afternoon winds from the north and a slight warming trend. Lovington sleet night low mid 20s, Saturday high in the upper 50s.
A western moving system brushed Lovington and Lea County with light snowfall on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Lovington reported about two inches with more in nearby areas. Tatum saw up to 3 inches. Despite limited moisture, the event marked a helpful start to winter with agreeable temperatures and no travel disruption.
Four children died when a car driven by Richard Roddy veered into oncoming traffic near Defiance Ohio on Christmas Eve. Eddie Kim and David Roddy aged 16 and 13 plus Trisha 4 and Jeff 15 were among the victims. Benny Fidler the other driver was listed in critical condition. The Christmas travel death toll across the nation neared 128 as a winter storm snarled travel in the east and Great Lakes regions with rain and snow.
Luther Marvin Blackmon, 96, longtime Lea County resident, died Wednesday at Good Samaritan Center after a brief illness. Born August 27, 1879 in Boone County Arkansas, he later moved to Texas and then Lea County in 1906. He worked for John L. Toole’s Store in Knowles, married Ella May Musick in 1909, and held positions at Florence Love Grocery, Robinson-Dunaway Hardware, and First Territorial Bank. He served as Lea County Clerk from 1922 to 1924.
Santa Fe New Mexico- MVD Director Jerry Manzagol proposes shifting the annual vehicle re registration deadline to avoid Christmas conflicts. He notes only about 40 percent of 850000 mailed forms have been returned since November and cites holiday spending and tax timing as reasons for delays.
In Hollywood California a fire at Samuel Goldwyn Studios consumed two sound stages used for Cannon and Barnaby Jones. No injuries reported as flames gutted both stages 100 by 300 feet, with guard James Velthuis noting the complete destruction of both sets amid a large lot fire.
New Mexico Military Institute President Gen. C C Robert Kemble said the board will study the attorney general opinion declaring NMMI’s exclusion of women from the cadet program violates the New Mexico Equal Rights Amendment. The board will address potential facility and financial impacts for admitting women cadets.
Frank G. Lopez of 1001 N 2nd was jailed on $800 bond for assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer and carrying a deadly weapon after pulling a knife on Sgt. Haskill Elkins on Christmas Eve while being released on bond. Officer Mike Elliott drew his pistol as Lopez brandished the blade and then tucked it away. Elkins and Elliott re arrested Lopez and sent him back to jail.
