Mercy missions in the Navajo Reservation will taper off today as rescue teams continue to aid Indians after severe winter storms. The focus will shift to hay deliveries and roadwork while weather improves. Eight deaths on the reservation were attributed to the storms, with Air Force Army and Navy aircraft dropping hay, food, and medical aid across the 25,000 square mile area. Major routes are open though some secondary roads remain closed due to snow and ice.

The Lovington Kiwanis Club and Lovington Chamber of Commerce announced contest winners. Best home lighting first went to Lloyd Skinner, second to Mrs. Billie G. Baker, third Eddie Robinson. Shorty Luce won best religious scene. Best outside lighting went to Mrs. Percy Wirt with Ricky Moore and George Blackard in second and third. Prizes were donated by local merchants.
Two Spanish American youths, a 14 year old boy and a 15 year old girl, were arrested on charges of breaking and entering. Investigators tied them to break-ins at Lovington National Bank and a Skelly Station scene where the male juvenile was found inside the bank. He admitted to earlier break-ins at the service station, taking a hammer and $22.97 from a money bag, the hammer used to smash a large north bank window.
