Three people died when their car was struck by a Southern Pacific freight train at the Chelsea Road crossing in El Paso. A woman was injured. The train, moving slowly, pushed the car over a thousand yards before stopping, police said.

National Safety Council warned final Christmas holiday traffic deaths could reach 650 to 750 as 604 fatalities were tallied by 10 30 p m EST through the first four days. California and Texas each logged 52 deaths with New York 30 Indiana 26 Georgia 24 and North Carolina 2. Alaska New Hampshire and Wyoming had no deaths. Texas saw four fatal collisions totaling 13 deaths. The four day holiday record is 706 in 1956 while 9335 deaths set in 1953.

Reds Release Sergeant From Viet Cong Captivity
UPI reports US Army sergeant Roque S. Matagulay 30 Richmond California released unharmed on Christmas Eve by Viet Cong near Phan Thiet after six months captivity. He and interpreter Aliso traveled eight hours through rugged terrain to safety near Saigon. Matagulay and M. Sgt. Carl Brown were captured July 22 during a hunting trip near Phan Thiet.
