Lovington plans two new city water wells after the first of the year. A permit to relocate a south side well was received December 27. November pumpage was 69,696,000 gallons, the year's lowest.
A dynamite blast damaged the Birmingham home of Rev. F L Shuttlesworth and injured his wife, two children, and a guest. Shuttlesworth, head of the Alabama Christian Movement for Christian Rights, declared the group would ignore segregation laws until repealed. He said the bombing would not deter efforts to integrate bus seating.
The State Supreme Court killed a plan to allow absentee ballots, while saying a constitutional path remains for other casting methods. It refused to reverse prior rulings that deemed absentee voting unconstitutional, noting the court must strike statutes clearly violating the constitution. A. E. West of Clovis sought permission to vote out of his precinct in Curry County, a petition denied to enable a test case.
In November Lovington reports 27 dogs captured and 26 destroyed amid a cleanup drive. Garbage trucks logged 2 375 miles hauling 2 232 cubic yards. Workforce reduced by two workers. Four dead animals removed and 93 dog calls processed with inspections for sanity taps gas and final checks.
The Lovington Fire Department handled six calls in November. An old car body burned, one run went to an oil rig across the line into Texas, two trailer fires were extinguished, and a gas pump at a filling station was involved. The final call was at a residence in the city’s east part.
State employment officials report New Mexico non-farm employment at 201000 this year. Fred C. Barron of the employment security commission notes an 15000 rise from last year and an eight percent gain. Barron adds all major activities are rising and unemployment should run around 12500.
Sheriff deputies chase a strange case after a 1954 Ford pickup is stolen and involved in a Guadaloupe Pass crash. Lee Morgan is injured and Hampton is held. wallet ownership ties Hampton to Carlsbad and a ditched truck owner in Roswell under scrutiny. City finances show November income 79200.78 and expenses 17818.96.
Oscar J. Stephens, 42, a Butler Construction Co. employee, was found dead in his bed at Clark Apartments 600 South Dal Paso Hobbs on Christmas morning. Justice of Peace Louis Bryan ruled natural causes after an inquest. He is survived by wife Leona of Dyess Arkansas and three children. Body moved to Mona hans Texas for shipment to Jonesboro Arkansas for interment.
The small business administration predicts a prosperous 1957 with stronger competition. Director Wendell Barns says total U S output will rise and small businesses will share in the national gains.
Melvin Renstrom told police he was struck by a wandering horse that jumped the hood of his car on a city street, denting a fender after he stopped to let the animals pass in Billings Montana.
Arch ie LeRoy Cole 41 and Anna Agnes Surse 81 widow sought a marriage license in Muskegon Michigan with a reporter noting her cooking skills as a compliment to the couple.
Eva Lee Fourqurean 48 died from a .410 shotgun blast near Eunice on Christmas evening around 8 p.m. She lived with husband George and son George Earl six miles south of Eunice. Remains were taken to Stamford Texas for burial by Griffin Service of Hobbs.
Mrs. Naante Bertie Harned 83 died Christmas morning at Lea County Hospital Hobbs after living with son Jack Dalton since 1949. Survived by son R L Harned of Lincoln Neb sister E G Kirkpatrick Lake Charles La brother D L Seay Nashville Tenn. She was a Methodist. services held at Green Chapel Hobbs with burial in Albuquerque Fairview Cemetery beside her husband.
Wallace Crawley of Caprock was brought to Lovington for first aid after an oil field accident Monday morning. He began cleaning a tank on the Denton Field lease, removed the cover plate, and was overcome by gas escaping from the tank while working for Randy's Field Service.
Kenneth Wayne Wilson a six weeks old infant son of Mr and Mrs Kenneth Wilson of Tatum was buried in Lovington December 25. Services were at 2 p.m. at Love Street Baptist Church with Rev M J Mahaffy officiating. The child was found dead earlier in the morning in his bed. The mother formerly Miss Laura Stuart of Denver City Texas.
In Lea County New Mexico Deputy J G McAdoo reports no fatalities or injuries during the four day Christmas period. A traffic safety campaign started December 1 by the sheriff's team reduced speeds and improved courtesy on highways. The nation meanwhile logged 601 traffic deaths over the holiday period. Russian politics shift as Deputy Premier Maxim Saburov is ousted. Mikhail Pervukhin replaces him with aides to accelerate industrial planning and production.
Banks in Lea County raise savings rates with different starts and compounding terms. The First National Bank of Hobbs informed customers on December 15 of a new rate with semiannual compounding. Lovington National will pay 2 percent starting January 1, 1957.
Democratic Senator Sparkman of Alabama says the United States should consider pulling troops back to the west bank of the Rhine if Russia withdraws from East Germany. He would not support a full troop withdrawal from Germany.
Washington hosts a conference at 11 a m with President Eisenhower and Vice President Nixon to map refugee intake from Hungary and Red-controlled nations. Nixon outlines broader aid while Safe Haven flights move 11 trips daily. about 7150 Hungarians arrived since December 11. A Budapest loan demand and Tokyo hunger strike add regional tensions as Nixon urges doubled aid to defuse communism.
Mrs Olive A Kneeler age 74 died December 23 after a long illness. She lived in Hobbs six weeks and is survived by two daughters Josephine Connelly Hobbs and Geo Harley Mexico City, one son Richard G Kneedler Tucson Arizona, four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was a member of the Eastern Star in Collinsville Illinois where the body was returned for services. Griffin Funeral Service in charge.
Four teen girls face juvenile court action after a Christmas Eve party in Alamogordo escalated into a stabbing assault. Emanuel Johnson, a 26 year old airman at Holloman Air Development Center, was hospitalized with six stab wounds. Police say jealousy over attention to another girl sparked the attack.
Hearings by a board of arbitration to determine payment for the Clayton Dam, built by W. H. Gilliard Construction Co. of Albuquerque, will resume in Albuquerque after a four month recess. The dispute centers on a claimed extra $200,000 by the state game and fish department under a contract clause for arbitration. The panel, led by A. T. Hennett, heard evidence for over a week last August.
About 50 popular and elm trees were donated and planted at the Little League Park in November. Evergreen trees were moved from the courthouse to the new restroom area, and later removed to make space for courthouse additions. Large trees were removed from the east side of the courthouse and replanted in 1917 to honor Caly Day settlers of Lea County.
City Hall reports Lovington finished the fall paving program with patching and maintenance underway. State Highway Department material supplied. streets graded, dust control applied. sewer plant beds rebuilt. curb and gutter costs shared by school and property owners on 9th Street.
Lovington police logged 294 motorist assists and 52 arrests in November. The department issued 167 traffic citations and 888 parking tickets while handling 19 accidents and 27 driver license exams. Total income reached 3066.72 with officials urging merchants to secure premises and keep lights on to deter break ins.
R G Boss Shannon died Tuesday in a Bridgeport hospital at age 79. He was a figure in the 1933 kidnapping of Oklahoma oilman Charles Uischel and, with five others, convicted of the ransom case. Eighties-long saga included a life sentence for all involved, with Aaron Shannon later paroled after Alcatraz service shortened by Roosevelt.

New Mexico reports a violent Christmas period with twelve fatalities from traffic crashes in the state and nationwide totals of 851 holiday deaths. In New Mexico three Albuquerque youths died in separate accidents on Christmas Day, with two more fatalities on U.S. 66 near Old Laguna and another collision east of Albuquerque.
John Wendell Dillon Jr a 19 year old former Albuquerque service station attendant admitted planning an attempted robbery of an Albuquerque National Bank branch. He was arraigned on federal charges held on 10000 bond after a teller foiled the attempt and police and FBI questioned him.
November building permits reached $208000 led by 14 residential units at $107000 and a health center project of $65000. Also approved were two churches at $25000 and a commercial job at $10000 plus a $1000 alteration.
The library served 1,368 users in November. Staff added 100 new books and issued 44 new library cards granting access to the collection.
