Light sale at Lea Auction shows steadier market
The Lea County Livestock Auction reported 284 head sold versus 640 the prior week as cattle prices edged up slightly. Manager Larry Wooten noted the market was not tested fully but appeared about steady with heifer calves and utility cows about 50 cents stronger. Eighty pair of whiteface cows with black baldface calves were consigned for next Tuesday from the R. E. Self ranch dispersal of Elida. Representative sales included James M. Scott with hol hfr calves and several others from Lovington, Monument, and nearby consignors, with prices ranging from about 20 to 30 dollars per hundredweight.

City county and federal offices will be closed Friday after Christmas and reopen Monday. Lovington police stay open Friday while the courthouse remains closed as reported. post office closed Thursday and Friday with Saturday mail as usual. Safety device on bridge saves life in Santa Fe incident
State police credited an experimental hidro cell safety system on a Pojoaque bridge abutment with absorbing the impact when Manuel Sena Jr. swerved to avoid a vehicle and struck the barrier. The fluid filled elastic bottles, installed three days earlier, deflected the 45 mph truck and likely prevented fatal injuries. Eighty bottles were strapped to the abutment by the Highway Department as a safety experiment.
