They lived in Lovington since 1944 he was a retired internist. Survived by wife Georgia one son Bill Jackson Artesia one daughter Beth Reed Lovington one brother Jim Jackson Dallas Oregon and five sisters Bessie Van Winkle Mattie Mae Gissler Mary Dowell Leuvena Beck and Anna Frances Walton. Boy Repels Lion With Hunting Knife in Rye Colorado
Thane Morgan, 14, was mauled on Greenhorn Trail near Rye but fought off a mountain lion with a hunting knife. He was hospitalized in satisfactory condition after wounds to scalp face and hand. A Rye man tracked and killed the feline, a young female, with multiple gunshots. The cat was sent to Colorado State University for tests. officials do not believe it was rabid.

Ann Locknane of Lovington has been appointed Lea County Extension 4-H home economist effective December 20 replacing Lauriermore. She will recruit train and support 4-H leaders and develop Extension educational programs for area youth. Locknane is a former Curry County trainee and a Clovis High School graduate with a bachelor’s in home economics education from NMSU.

Winter Wheat Planting Down 3 Percent in 1977
The Agriculture Department reports 1977 winter wheat acreage at 55.8 million acres, down 3 percent from 1976. Expected yield near 25.8 bushels per acre, about 1.2 fewer than 1976, may drive the 1977 harvest to around 1.438 billion bushels. Rye plantings also fall to 2.9 million acres.
